Especially when you consider there are more mobile phones in use than there are residents in the country....who HASNT got a mobile phone? so why walk to a rank?

Confession time! I drive both hackney and PH. When I'm in the PH and go to the pick up point, house, pub whatever, I announce myself as "taxi for XXXX". I'm sorry, I know i should say "pre booked private hire car for XXX" but i don't.

You announce yourself? How do you do that in a crowded pub?

I press a button on my datahead and the customer gets a missed call.

I never reveal what name the job is booked under.. 90% of punters, when needing a taxi (private hire vehicle  ) will say "that's me" if you tell them and jump in. Which in turn leads to angry customers, and receptionists in a bad mood radioing to ask where the hell you are

well the PH guy often gets his job via the pda or whatever they use, it usually tells them where and when to pick up, and where they are going, even the price maybe fixed, all the info is delivered, and if hes incompetent he can use the sat nav.

now the hack driver on the other hand, may get hailed on the street or may be on the rank, he will have no idea of where the job is going to until the customer tells him directly, no pda required, he may use the sat nav, but its pick, drop, no waiting around for the pda.

i had a taxi 5 years ago iv got a ph now, i sold the taxi plate cause a was not well and had to stay off for a year i got good money for the plate and i had the plate for 30 years, i can't see much difference in taxi's and PH's now i suppose having a taxi gives you a bit more presence on the road. where i'm at Wishaw north lanarkshire we don't really bother about PH and taxis we class our self's all as TAXIS and a taxi is called a general and a private hire is called, a private.

I'd sooner take a job in tescos than get involved in the London slave trade, aka London minicab trade.

Swap my 3/4 shifts for 7 days a week?

Pmsl!!
