Its odd that the new Superb is 500kg (half a tonne) lighter than the smaller Octavia ........

It isn't. I thought that this had been cleared up on the other thread that you put this on. You were not using the same stats for both vehicles. in one you were using kerb weight which is the weight of the vehicle without passengers standing at the kerb. In the other you were using axle weight which is the maximum weight that the car can carry.

right, but comparing the two 2.0tdi cars they are about the same then at about 1400kg

BTW, avoid using 6th gear, 5th will give better mpg, 6th makes the engine work to hard, my mondeo is only doing 1800 rpm at 80mph and its too low, go faster and the wind drag cancels out any advantage from using the right rpm (2250 rpm is best in mine)

it hasn't got 6 years just 5 the 1.6 tdi's have 5 gears and the 2.0 tdi's have 6 gears

One thing I would do is ignore the long service intervals, and change the oil every 10K, much better for the engine

when i had an old Octavia 51 plate SDI when on holiday in blackpool the service light came on so decided to take a run into a local dealer and asked if could get it a service the man behind the desk asked me how many miles it had on told him 10,000 roughly he went away and brought one of the mechanics out and he checked it out oil, filters etc and they were reasonably clean, and said that the cars don't need serviced every 10,000 miles and variable servicing is the way to go so brought the computer out and changed it too variable servicing and done that with every other car iv'e bough 55 plate octavia, 57 plate octavia and now a 62 plate superb the cars don't need servicing every 10,000 and mine is set for every 18,000

think they are quite pricey but as long as you don't do very short journeys it should be okay every week day my school contract goes from the Motherwell area up to Linlithgow and it gives it a good blast every morning and the same in the afternoon and then just driving about doing taxiing but if you just use it to drive round to the shops etc it will clog up and the light will come on you need to give it a long drive at high revs to help it clean itself and if the EML comes on in conjunction with the DPF light you need to go to a garage to clean it and if you don't do that and let it clog right up you will need a new DPF filter

Long service intervals may be ok for Jo public, but as a taxi your stopping and starting all day, with the odd hammering at weekends.
An old showman said to me always change your oil religiously every 10 K and it will run for ever

when i picked it up i was waiting outside for it to be brought out the garage and was speaking too one of the mechanics said that most of the taxi drivers use the varible servicing and said that in november they had a 54 plate octy with 512,000 miles on the clock the highest he had ever seen in his days it was a taxi and only had one owner from new and said that it was always on variable servicing and running like a dream had the good old 1.9 tdi in it

I doubt many taxis get the hammering that a multidrop van gets (DHL/SOL/Businesspost) doing 200 stop/starts a day

According to most drivers on here, there is no work so their cars must be getting an easy life.
