Should we get the vote on EU membership post 2015 election, then many of the above might not get in.

And the rest will struggle.

Provided they qualify - they can already drive minicabs here.

It's a whole lot easier to qualify when there are no or very little qualifications

yes something that the LC doesn't seem to be including

All those extra PH/taxi drivers flooding the market. Would the extra influx of drivers mean that earnings will go down as fare prices go up?

I beg to differ grandad, if you're earning less drivers will put fares up contrary to the tariff in their vehicle

Not in this part of the world yes we are getting a few ripping off customers but in general fares have dropped 20 to 30% over the last 5 years

You don't know what the qualifications will be though - like everyone else you are guessing.

Unite the union are guessing the training will fill their coffers - as are the NPHA - as are Addison Lee and the larger PH companies that have their own in house training courses.......but with the added bonus of the training being free on the proviso the driver works for them for a period whilst he repays his debt.

Well it would then be up to the driver to ensure they make good choices and chose a decent company, it's not unusual for people to have to complete training courses to work within a trade

that's a matter of choice and a matter of occupation...............and for all of those training courses in murkyside - there's still a lot of folks getting caught infringing the laws and rules - :-k

:-$ better not mention them - because the lack of statistics may be instructive

I don't deny there are, nor will I deny that there will continue to be. I am just saying that it would be prudent for drivers to chose a course that is actually going to be beneficial to them and not just an exercise in ticking boxes

you can think what you want - I don't think drivers think though - I think they want on the road for the least amount of hassle - and training courses help fund unions

I'm not a great fan of unions as you know, but, they have their uses. The NVQ is no longer part of our requirement here as there is no funding for it, but, the Btec/VRQ is, that is considerably cheaper than the NVQ and only completed by new drivers prior to licence. I've always felt the Btec/VRQ was better value for money and considerably cheaper. I also think that if taught correctly is a really useful course.
