St George's flag row taxi driver replaces sticker — with new, bigger one

Image

A NEWTON Abbot cabbie at the centre of a 'local' St George's Cross row has removed her flags — and replaced them with new larger ones.

Denise Said, 56, peeled off her 'local driver' St George Cross stickers after she lost her appeal to retain them.

Now she has replaced them with bigger St George's flag stickers — but this time the words 'local taxi company' are written below the flags.

Denise said: "I have taken the old ones off as I was told to and replaced them with different ones.

"I expect that they will find fault with these ones too but I know 100 per cent that I have done nothing wrong.

"I have had so much support from people and I am amazed at how strongly people feel about it."

The move came after the council's appeals committee ruled that Denise had to remove the stickers or have her licence suspended.

They said it was the combination of the flag and the wording that caused concern.

Denise, who runs Lady D Taxis, said she is still considering whether to appeal against the decision at a magistrates' court.

The appeal to retain the signage was heard at Teignbridge Council's regulatory and appeals committee on Monday November 25.

The committee agreed the signs did not meet requirements of its Hackney Carriage and Private Hire licensing policy or the Equality Act 2010.

Rod Peers, speaking on behalf of Mrs Said who was formerly married to a half-Maltese man for 16 years, told the committee the stickers were not discriminatory and had nothing to do with race or nationality.

Licensing officer Hayley Carpenter said it was the combination of the flag and the words that caused difficulty.

A TDC spokesman said: "We will be inspecting the vehicle on a regular basis to ensure it complies with our vehicle licensing requirements and will consider further action if necessary."

Newton Abbot taxi driver peels off St George flags

A NEWTON Abbot cabbie at the centre of a 'local' St George's Cross row has removed all her flags.

Denise Said, 56, (pictured below) who runs Lady D taxis, said she could not afford to lose her licence over the spat with Teignbridge Council.

She initially peeled off her 'local driver' St George Cross stickers after she lost her appeal to retain them. She replaced them with bigger St George's flag stickers — with the words 'local taxi company' written below the flags.

But she has been advised that they were also unacceptable and she has removed them completely.

Denise said: "I was very upset about it and removed them under protest because I don't believe that I have done everything wrong.

"But this is my livelihood and I can't afford to lose my taxi licence.

"I feel like I have let people down but I do want to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported me. Messages have come from all over the world and I feel honoured to have so much goodwill."

The move came after the council's appeals committee ruled that Denise had to remove the stickers or have her licence suspended.

They said it was the combination of the flag and the wording that caused concern.

The committee ruled the signs did not meet requirements of its Hackney Carriage and Private Hire licensing policy or the Equality Act 2010.

A spokesman for Teignbridge Council said: "We have inspected the vehicle and the stickers have been removed.

"This means the vehicle complies with the licence and no further action is being taken at this time."

Well if you have then it's your own fault.

I don't have problems with drivers rucking with councils, in fact I often applaud it, but not over stickers FFS. [-X

Teignbridge Council dilemma over Romanian taxi drivers

A Devon council is planning to change its policy on criminal record and health checks for taxi drivers after a local firm said it wants to employ Romanian workers.

Teignbridge District Council has received driver applications from Romanian nationals who have been brought over to work in the district by a local company.

Councillors on the authority’s regulatory and appeals committee have been told that as a result of the applications, in October last year, it now needs to amend its policy to deal with criminal records and medical examinations for foreign nationals.

UK citizens who want to become a taxi driver must be checked through the Criminal Records Bureau and also have their health and fitness confirmed with a medical certificate from a doctor who has full access to the applicant’s medical records.

Councillors are being advised that similar systems may not exist in other countries and the council has spent some time in contact with the Romanian Embassy to clarify matters and taken advice from the Home Office and Department for Transport.

Council officers have made recommendations to change the licensing system for taxi drivers so that checks on the background and health of applicants from other countries can be made.

Councillor Alan Connett, chairman of Teignbridge council’s scrutiny committee, said he was surprised to learn a local taxi firm needed to bring in drivers from abroad.

“In the current climate, many people might be surprised, he added.

“You would have thought this is the type of work that could be recruited to locally, especially as knowledge of the area can be important and valued by customers.”

The regulatory and appeals committee meets on Thursday to consider the proposals.
