A taxi driver who raped a 19-year-old woman after she fell asleep in his cab ten years ago has been jailed due to a DNA match.

Ibrahim Khan, 45, of St Albans Avenue, Ashton, was found guilty of the 2004 attack after a trial at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court.

Police said Khan was held for an unrelated matter in 2012, with a DNA sample taken matching the 2004 crime.

Khan was jailed for eight years at a hearing on Thursday.

The woman, who had been on a night out in Altrincham, flagged down a taxi in the early hours of 31 October, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

'Abused trust'

GMP said the woman fell asleep in the car and later woke to find Khan was raping her. She managed to escape and run home.

Det Con Rachel Ostick said: "The public rely on taxi drivers to take them home safely, even when they are in vulnerable states and Khan abused this position of trust.

"As this case demonstrates, we will also continue to utilise every tool and developing technology available to us to track down those responsible for carrying out these despicable crimes, no matter how long it takes".

Isn't that DNA a good thing?

I wonder how many more are out there just waiting for that knock on the door?

Many people who committed crimes like rape years ago must be shitting themselves, they've only got to be pulled in by the Police for something minor and they'll be swabbed for DNA, the next minute they're charged with a plethora of offences.
