Taxi drivers from Wirral are the first to be trained up as “ambassadors” to represent the borough.

The move comes as Wirral prepares to welcome back the Open golf to the Royal Liverpool, as well as co-hosting the International Festival for Business this summer.

Private hire and hackney carriage drivers are now signing up to take part in the training provided by WorldHost, who also trained volunteers for the 2012 Olympics in London.

The training is intended to build on the customer service training they already receive, preparing them to welcome visitors from around the world.

Cllr Bill Davies, chair of Wirral council’s licensing committee, said: “Wirral and the wider Liverpool city region will be firmly in the spotlight this year, so it is vital that we do what we can to maximise the opportunities the events taking place will offer us.

“When people arrive here first time, let’s get it right first time."

“This is not just about the two and a half million visitors expected in Merseyside this year, it’s about the future, too.”

Workers in other services such as shops and restaurants are receiving the WorldHost training, which is free for those taking part as a result of funding from the Skills for Growth Bank – a partnership initiative between Merseytravel, Unionlearn and People1st.

The WorldHost training is intended to give drivers an understanding of how important their role is to the local economy and how uniquely placed they are to influence the opinions of those visiting the area.

Terry Holden, director of Argyle Park Taxis, said: “It was presented in an informative way and the message the drivers should get from it is they are business men and women and they are professional drivers and responsible for their own earnings capability, and this is affected by the way they present themselves and their appearance.”

Roy Garton, of Wirral Call Back Cars, added: “If drivers do this, it will be one hundred percent useful to them.

“I think it should be made part of the badge, and we should get drivers doing this when they are new.”

Karen Atherton, of A Team Wirral, said she would also recommend all private hire and cab drivers take the course, and added: “It’s been really useful.”

The sessions will continue until June. To find out more about the course, see http://www.merseylearn.net

If she is an ambassador, do we have to address her as "Your Excellency", and, as in the advert, will she be spoiling us?

Another I suppose....

Well to be fair to them I did learn that we have 14 golf courses on Wirral, now I never knew that and I've lived here all my life, so it was a bit of useful information

It's not very useful if you are looking for a tennis court.

We have several of those too and an indoor tennis club. The point of the course was to encourage drivers to learn more about the area in which they work so they are of more help to visitors and the more obvious customer related niceties

So you know where the Cat House is and all the "after dark activities" are available - it is just like the NVQ, Btech, VRQ or whatever it is called this week. A total load of Codswallop with a different label on it every so often.
They have it on the agenda here in Plymouth, I will avoid it like the plague. My time is more useful to me to work and earn, rather than sit in some classroom having the &(^*% bored off me.

You know me well enough, each to their own. I enjoyed it and we had laugh and as I said earlier I now know we have 14 golf courses here, I don't know where they all are but I know to look for them
