Cardiff taxi drivers to strike in dispute over new guidance


Taxi drivers in Cardiff are to strike tonight because of their unhappiness over new guidance issued by Cardiff Council.

Hackney Driver Association said its members will strike over two weekends on four nights in April.

There are concerns that clubbers and partygoers will not have a way home with the strike action in place.

The new guidance affects taxicab services that can be hailed on the street. Private hire drivers won't be affected.

The Council issued new guidance after complaints in the wake of a series of reported sex attacks in the capital last year.

In September, concerns were raised that lone women had been refused journeys by drivers which they deemed to be too short a distance.

The new guidance allows anyone who may felt they were wrongly turned down for a journey to take the driver’s details and report them.

90 complaints were made within three weeks following the change.

The association says these complaints were simply a result of the increased number of people visiting the city for the Rugby World Cup.

The council received some 90 complaints in three weeks mainly during the Rugby World cup tournament, when 70,000 to 100,000 rugby fans filled up every nook and cranny of the city especially whenever Wales was playing at home or away, and most of them are fairly drunk and some of them are heavily drunk or too drunk to travel in taxis. Hence the degree of complaints increased significantly, due to the fact that there was 10 times more people in the city, compared to the amount of people we normally have in any given time, and most of them were heavily under the influence of alcohol.

The group alleged that drivers have been punished unfairly – with five drivers since having their licences suspended.

Cardiff council has defended its right to take disciplinary action against individuals who refuse a fare without good reason, and explained its reasoning behind pursuing complaints through a committee rather than through a prosecution.

The Licensing Authority hasn’t been informed by organisers if the strike is going ahead and would therefore advise interested parties to contact the Chairman of the Hackney Carriage Association, Mathab Khan, to make further enquiries.

The Council maintains that rather than threatening strike action, we would advise all drivers to understand and abide by their licensing conditions, or face enforcement action for breaching the law.

Apparently the strike will take place from 00.00 to 02.00, in effect that will make it a non event. Basically it will be a waste of time as it is the middle of the month, with not much money around. As such there will be no great numbers out, and most of those who are out after the buses stop - will be going home well after 02.00. PH will do better than normal

Free advice no charge for you Welsh cretins have the strike on Friday Saturday and Sunday nights in the City centre where you turn your lights off take no-one out of the City from about 8pm but of course pick up all and sundry from the outskirts trying to get into the City and dump them there ..................got it thickos

Also do a press release along the lines below quoting the number of complaints upheld after a formal investigation

Drivers accused of declining short runs is one thing, being found guilty of it after a formal investigation is something else # and there have been xx number upheld naturally we expect all drivers to act fully within the legislation ! and not decline any job without justification allowed for in the legislation !

Is there a nation anywhere as thick and gutless as these Welsh faggots

feel that it is nevertheless the fault of the Council who have driven the tariff down.If they took a more responsible stance of making sure that the tariff allowed the drivers to earn a decent return, as other LA's do, then this situation would probably never have arisen.

hmmmm................... most LA's are quite keen to drive taxi fares down whilst demanding higher standards and more money in fees from drivers. If there are other LA's that don't they are probably in the minority

Spotted you in one, I new that the above was not possible from you, as you would have your little red book in front of you spouting the obvious.

Where are your useless Unions now? They came into existence because of "their" organisational ability, "their" abilty to organise strikes/disruption! Unfortunately just like you they have become empty vessels spouting nothing but lies. They are too lazy to get off of their backsides to get the business out there (for their coffers) - instead they would rather take back handers via grants from the government than to do their jobs properly.
