Taxi Driver Online

Hi, just about to get my badge, and thinking of using my 2.0 16v vectra. However i've been told i'd be better with the diesel version. But i heard diesels need to be serviced more regular than petrols so what do you think would be best to use ?

I think anyone in the PH/taxi trade that doesn't drive a diesel is a tad silly.

I think that was the case when diesels first became popular as motor cars, but I don't think it's such an issue now with the more modern models and better oil.

Some of the new diesels can do 20,000 without an oil change on long-life oil, but I think 10,000 is more typical.

Of course, it all depends on the particular cars you're comparing and what the service actually involves, but even assuming it is a bit more expensive for servicigin there seems little doubt that the diesel works out a good bit cheaper in the long run.

On the other hand, if you have a car already if you traded it in for a diesel then you would probably loose a good wodge, so to that extent it could be an idea to keep hold of it just now.

If you've got a decent motor, then you would probably be best hanging on to it; but generally I would say that it is better to go for a diesel in the taxi trade.

I think you would probably find that the percentage of diesels is far greater than that of petrols.

why not look on ebay & see if there is a suitable car with an LPG conversion already done?? also check out LPG refil staions in ya area if you decide to go down this route

I have taxied both for some time over the years. If it is a half decent petrol car my immediate personal advice would be to use it at least for a while to see how you get on.. Yes there are savings etc with diesel and to be frank I have run on diesel for a few good years now. You have to offset that by thinking of higher initial costs and to some extent more servicing. However, the main criteria in the long term is the diesel will, on average last much better than the petrol in terms of mileage.

A very old saying, "it's easier to find the extra £5 a night in petrol than it is to find £1000 when the diesel pump goe's wrong".

Diesel's are more reliable now, but my dad use's a petrol 2.0litre mondeo and he reckon's it's blinding on fuel.

The answer is "how long is a piece of string".

In the old day's we all had petrol and earned a living.

I'm now in my third week of taxiing using the Vectra 2.0L petrol and i've worked out its costing around 17p a mile in fuel. Does anyone have any figures for a any diesel motor ?

Assuming fuel is one pound a litre, dividing 4.50 by 17 gives a reading of 26.47 miles per gallon. It would appear your vehicle is not very economical, assuming your figure of 17p is correct.

I think the Skoda diesels average out now at about 10p a mile.
