QUEEN HITCHES LIFT WITH ISLAND CABBIE

BYLINE: By Charlie Gall

ISLAND shopkeeper Russell Town turned royal chauffeur when the Queen hitched a lift in his people carrier.

Russell, 42, was staggered when Princess Anne and husband Commander Tim Laurence cycled to his store on the tiny Hebridean island of Gigha. He was even more shocked when Princess Anne asked: "Any chance of a lift for Her Majesty?" Russell then drove the royal party - with the Queen in the passenger seat - to the island's famous Achamore Gardens.

Last night, he said: "The big joke on the island is that I charged her pounds 12. "That never entered my head in the slightest. It's what's called 'a bloody honour', definitely. "A security officer took my name and said the lady-in-waiting would send a thank-you letter. That will do me." The Queen and her family are on her 80th birthday cruise in the Western Isles.

The Hebridean Princess dropped anchor off Gigha after Princess Anne suggested a visit to Achamore Gardens. The royal party faced a 10-mile round trip from the shore to the gardens - but had no transport. So Princess Anne cycled to the local store where Russell regularly provides transport for visitors.

Yesterday, he told the Record: "It was absolutely amazing - I'm still reeling after it. "Princess Anne and Tim Laurence cycled down from the ship with Peter Phillips and his girlfriend.

"They waited until the Sunday paper rush was over, introduced themselves, and said, 'Any chance of a lift for Her Majesty?' "I said that of course there was." Princess Anne and her party cycled back to the boat followed by Russell in his Peugeot 806 people carrier.

He said: "The Queen may be 80 but she's certainly sprightly.

"She was in trousers and had her headscarf on as she walked to the car. She just jumped in next to me and took her head scarf off. It just doesn't happen, does it? "She was an absolute gem as well. I thought I'd keep quiet and show a bit of respect. But she was like a chatterbox.

"She was talking about the island and the buy-out a few years ago. "She wanted to know about the school and if the roll was increasing, things like that. "As we were passing the shop, I said, 'Ma'am, there's my youngest daughter there'. Serena was just sitting on the grass waiting for us to come by. The Queen waved to her with a big smile on her face."

Former service engineer Russell and his family moved to Gigha from Lincolnshire three years ago. He now runs the Post Office, shop, petrol station, and turns his hand to lots of other tasks. He said: "Princess Anne comes on to the island at least once every two years. I think it was at her suggestion that the Queen wanted to visit the gardens.

"The party were there for a good hour-and-a-half. "Her Majesty seemed to be thoroughly enjoying herself. "When we had finished, they shook my hand again and said, 'That's great, thank you very much'. "But it was she who did me a great honour. A thank-you and handshake off the Queen is more than enough for me."

'I thought I'd keep quiet and show a bit of respect but she was a chatterbox'

And that’s precisely why 98% of the British Public ignores the unions nowadays.

The GMB clearly live on another planet, one ruled by Ming perhaps?

Yup, it`s quite clear you are as mad as a hatter. I have to say though, this forum hasn't made me laugh so much since you started posting. You really are a joke, and not one in good taste my friend.

1- Your grammer is worst than my 7 years olds attempts.

2- Your cakehole would probably obscure everyone else’s.

I look forward to your updates after the meeting, providing your not arrested before then for spreading religious hatred.
