GA, I understand what you are saying, my company is looking at a fully automatic computer system at the moment, however, you still need a good controller overseeing whats going on and keeping an eye on the telephonists and what jobs they take.
I can only give an opinion on london phv work so imagine this;
It's 2 o clock friday night and the phones goes, "can I have a cab please, i'm standing in liecester sqaure and I promise I will wait", I know that there is no point sending a car because they will jump in the first car they see and the driver will get a scrubb. Or the local scum bag phones from the local estate and wants to go on a runaround doing his dodgy dealings, I won't send a car because it's going to be aggro.
A good computer system can make the job easier, but can't replace a good controllers knowledge.

I don't disagree at all with what you are saying Rambo.

Good controllers are definitely at a premium and necessary if any office is going to be successful.

What I'm saying here is that the salespeople from these data companies sell their systems on the basis that no special skills are required to operate them and a proportion of the money spent on such systems can be saved by not paying premium wages.

Office owners therefore begrudge paying top dollar for a clerk when they have spent tens of thousands on a computer system.

That is, in the main, where your biggest problem lies.

As I said earlier that should not stop them from fulfilling their legal obligations as an employer .............. however in the real world we all know it does and I understand your reluctance to complain because of reprisals. Support from the drivers would make you feel like part of the team, however the same threats are often made to the drivers as well.

To be honest as i have said before you are entitled to your opinion just the same as i am, however i view this site for informative reasons mainly and a little bit of humour, so therefore have no real need to get fully involved with most of the debates on this forum. My sincere appoligies to all those i left out,hope that makes you happy,but to be serious,the point of this debate is that a worker in part of our industry is being illegally ripped off! My point is that there is an answer we hear of the fears of the victims,but see no determination to confront the issue.The reason being that the work force is fragmented and unable to grasp the necessity of being organised.If shelf stackers at ASDA.Local authority workers nationwide,hospital ancillary staff etc,can see it why not the workers in this industry.No one in these areas would tolerate this abuse why do you?Fact this industry is the 3rd most dangerous occupation in the country.Fact 98 of the top 100 companies on the FTSE have union recognition agreements,Fact unorganised workers bottom the earnings league.Why are the workers in this industry so afraid of organisation?what are their fears,isolation,bogus self employment.victimisation,VIOLENCE,anyone care too answer sensibly.

I have often wondered why all the national organisations don't get together and put proposals to government to achieve positive change for our whole industry.

Then I read the ineffectual rants of a branch secretary of the GMB, who is living in the 1960's where he believes that POWER will effect change. Similar garbage is spouted by those from the T&G and the result is NO CHANGE at best.

All of the people who claim to represent the National needs of the taxi industry need to review their strategy, policy and structure or they will continue to decline. Not that we need to question why when this bloke rants like some kind undersexed dog.

Organise - yes definitely
Educate - yes definitely
Agitate - that's why you will overcome nothing.

The answer to that GA is simple they are all too full of themselves, all wanting to show who is the achiever, and because of that they end up achieving not a thing, if they really cared for their members whether they be private hire or Hackney they would sit round the table and take their policies forward as one, but to do that they would have to share the glory, and that is something they are not prepared to do.
