Passenger injured in tuk-tuk accident

A woman was taken to hospital after the first road accident involving a tuk-tuk. The passenger, in her 20s, was injured after one of the motorised rickshaws crashed into a stationary vehicle on Saturday. She was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with injuries to her arm. She also complained of feeling faint.

The tuk-tuk driver lost control on Marine Drive, Brighton, at 3pm after one of its tyres got a puncture. TucTuc Limited, the company in charge of the popular vehicles, described it as a freak accident. A spokeswoman said their mechanic regularly serviced the vehicles and a burst tyre was not something which could have been predicted.

Dominic Ponniah, executive director of the company, said in a statement: "The driver was able to quickly bring the vehicle under control and to a complete stop. It is with regret that one passenger was slightly injured in the accident.

"A member of Sussex Police reported that the driver handled the situation with the correct level of care and attention. "TucTuc Limited ensures vehicles are regularly serviced and all drivers are fully trained in vehicle handling and passenger safety. Seatbelts are fitted in all tuk-tuks and it is a legal requirement for all passengers to wear them.

"While this was an unfortunate occurrence, TucTuc Limited would like to apologise for the incident. "We would reassure the public that the safety of tuk-tuk passengers and other road users is paramount."

Absolutely, but how many punctured tyres in normal vehicles results in a passenger injury, in an urban setting at least?

Four wheels good, three wheels bad.

For -the tuk-tuks are fun and environmentally friendly. Plus they’re in keeping with the creative nature of the city.
84.6%

Against – they are unsafe and are taking profits from Brighton and Hove’s taxi drivers
12.8%

seems the public like tuc tucs

Mind you, the style of question sets people against taxis

I've voted to ban the bloody things.

As for the %, I suspect their well oiled PR machine has been a tad naughty. [-X

Still I think the folks on the argus forum are getting the message.

comrade terry to the resue. :D

http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/letters/ ... decide.php

Taxis v tuk-tuks - referee will decide

It isn't GMB's members or their taxi/private hire colleagues, who are taking TucTuc to court.

The traffic commissioner has convened a public inquiry, alleging numerous breaches of three separate acts of Parliament, not because a few taxi drivers have concerns but because of what the commissioner's investigators have witnessed.

Time will tell what the final outcome will be but it seems to me the fact an inquiry has been called within months of TucTuc starting speaks volumes.
continued...

A correspondent to The Argus letters page confirmed "she knew for a fact" that tuk-tuk drivers have knowledge and driving tests and are police checked.

If you consider a few laps around the marina's car park as meeting the knowledge and driving tests, so be it, but she is wrong when she says tuk-tuk drivers are police checked.

The police no longer carry out such checks and anyone who has ever had a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check knows they take months, not the five-minute tick the yes/no box used by TucTuc Ltd.

While it may be easy for the owner of TucTuc Ltd to blame taxi drivers for its woes, he is the only person at fault.

He supplied his timetable to the traffic commissioner.

If he can't meet his own requirements, it is down to him not my members.

If he spent a bit more time and money getting his vehicles to run to his timetable, rather then wasting it on PR and spin, he might be able to run a business which adheres to the rules and regulations other local bus companies have to.

If he really wants to blame someone, I suggest he takes a look in a mirror.

I am in two minds about the above statement, but national bodies do open doors.
