Streetcars who gives a f--k to aquiess to an unjust law is to accept it, time for the battle in my book. The action of T&G at Gate Gourmet and Heathrow was in MY opinion unacceptable.

It has been drawn to my attention that, in this thread. I may have caused offence to Tommy McIntyre, T&G convener for hackney cab drivers. I would just like to say to Tommy, that if I have offended him, in any way. I am deeply sorry. I know how hard he has worked, over the years, for the Liverpool hackney and national hackney trade for that matter. I know it’s the hardest and most thankless, job of the lot. It was only my intention, to draw attention to this issue. And shake Liverpool hackney drivers, from their apathy. Not offend you. Once again sorry. Best wishes streetcars.

Well done streetcars, takes a lot to apologise.

I know there's more happening on the ground, behind the scenes, than people might think.

The above story

Cab drivers reach deal with airport

Dec 18 2006

By Alan Weston, Liverpool Daily Post Staff

HACKNEY cab drivers at Liverpool John Lennon airport have reached a settlement in a row over fees. The drivers were protesting about a plan by airport authorities to impose an annual fee of £2,500 to pick up passengers visiting the city.A go-slow planned for Friday was called off at the last minute after a new plan to introduce a card-operated barrier to the taxi rank was agreed. This would mean black cab drivers buying credits for a swipe card which would allow them to gain entry to the rank and pick up passengers.

Although no fee has yet been set, it is likely to be in the region of £1 for each time the driver wants to access the taxi rank. Both sides said last night they were happy with the proposed solution to settle the dispute, although a T&G union spokesman admitted that the cost of the scheme for taxi drivers was likely to be passed on to passengers.Kevin Maguire, the Transport and General Workers Union's representative who liaised with the airport, said: "The details of how the barrier system is going to work and be implemented is still under negotiation."A number of meetings are planned for the new year to discuss the best way forward."We thought a permit system was unfair and restrictive as it would only have allowed a small number of hackneys. With a barrier, any hackney driver will be able to apply for a swipe card."It is likely that most drivers will pass the charge on to the customer."

Airport owners Peel Holdings said they needed to introduce charges because they were losing money as Liverpool was the only airport which did not charge black cab drivers for using the taxi rank.John Lennon airport spokesman Robin Tudor said the new system would also allow them to improve visitors' first impressions of the city. Drivers will be expected to observe a basic dress code, and to participate in 08 Welcome and Welcome International short courses before Capital of Culture year.He added: "It means black cab drivers will only pay a small charge as and when a vehicle comes through the barrier."It will also give us some control to ensurethatthose who give apoor quality of service do not use the taxi rank."It is important that they are ambassadors for the city as soon as people arrive at the airport. The unions are determined, as we are, that we achieve a really good first-class service."Mr Tudor said the charging system, originally due to be introduced on January 1, would now be deferred until mid-February, along with the reinstatement of the taxi rank at the front of the airport, which was withdrawn after last summer's security alert.

10 jobs per day out of the airport would equal to around 2000 quid per year
but will the Council allow to add the charge to the meter

I tend to think the LA in Liverpool will take account of this in future tariff increases, although they may already have something in place regarding tolls because of the Mersey Tunnel (although that's a guess).
