And should a Private Hire Owner driver be required to REMOVE signage when a testing centre fails the vehicle and retains the plates until the vehicle is re-tested?

If a vehicle is no longer licensed then it should remove any taxi/PH signage IMO.

Little bit different if it fails a council test, as it might be back in a few hours to be re-tested.

geoff, i wasnt on about you flagging( cant get you to work never mind flag   ) i was on about other cars who forget there door signs late at night which does baffle me because its when the office is busy and they cant be arsed going round 2 corners ( i dont see there point in paying settle and going flagging when they have legit work)
as for the taxicall work simple no pen needed full handsfree on the phone and a dictaphone style voice recorder .when im repeating the job back to customer its recorded and i playback and put details in dairy later when im bored on rank or go on it when im clear if its for asap (got a good memory me been so young)

So as I as an Hack, as I do most times when shunting the wife about, take off the dressings, the top light and plate, and travel in cog nito, I do this because if you park up, leave your vehicle, the nerds will come and smash a window to see if any goodies are in the vehicle

so lets go further or deeper into the subject

If I was to travel about [remember once licenced as a hack always licenced as a hack] and started to use the taxi and bus only streets [no top sign, no plate showing] or even the bus lanes, can I do so legally

yes or no??

I think your insurance would cover you if you had an accident, but you could well lose your licenses.

I had a letter from the PCO because I have got Union flag stickers on my car and someone had reported me to the PCO. The regs state that no external signage is allowed so I am breaking the law. I have not taken them off yet though  .

Doesn't the wording say 'on'?

So is the sign, albeit the flag of the UK, being displayed on the inside? :?

Both on the outside, front and rear windows.
I will have to take them off, if I get stopped on the road I can be stopped from working. Stopped from working because I have the countrys flag on my car?, Great Britain 2007

I've been informed that i do need door sign's at all times. The fact that it doesnt say "at all times" or "when working" in our conditions is irrelevant. I must say this seems a very grey area to me.

Also i was told that i shouldnt use the bus lanes without door sign's on, even though the bus lane sign says "busses, cycles, taxi and licenced private hire vehicles only"
To me my vehicle is licenced, the fact that i'm not displaying door sign's doesnt matter, i'm not working.
I should remove my plate's as well if i'm not displaying door sign's, but even if i do, i'm still a licenced PHV surely? My mot and insurance state im a PHV.

I suppose the courts are the only people qualified to determine if the condition the way it is worded requires door signs at all times.

Ta JD, the only reason i dont display when not working is for security. Some morons see a Taxi parked up in town and think there's cash to be had. What about the bus lane issue?

Bus lanes are not a licensing matter, however I do believe there has never been a court case where such a scenario as the one you present has come before the courts.

In many cases Bus lanes are now the domain of the local council and not the police. If bus lanes still come under the jurisdiction of the police in your area and you are displaying a private hire plate or disc or whatever? Then I suspect that would be sufficient, the same would apply to the council if they wanted to fine you then they would have to prove in a court of law that you weren't a private hire vehicle at the time you drove in the bus lane? Any breach of condition by you in respect of signage is a licensing matter and nothing to do with the status of the vehicle as far as bus lanes are concerned.

The working element is something that could have legs but I wouldn't be a hundred percent convinced about that, after all, buses that are not working are not precluded from using a bus lane and neither are Taxis. Having no plates on the vehicle and driving in a bus lanes could well render you liable for a fine.

The best thing would be to comply with the bus lane regulations and then you won't have any problems but I'm sure your post will generate plenty of interest.

Regards

JD

If I am allowed to fly the Union flag then you can fly the tricolour, why you would want to though is beyond me.

Are other area's vehicles allowed in your bus lanes? If so what happens if they don't have or allow door signs?
