I think T. is acting more and more like an online troll.

But T. please don't leave, you are backing up the case for a de-limited UK fleet of cabs a thousand times better than I ever could.

And you are doing a great job in showing all on here exactly why PH are taking more and more work from the likes of you.

Flexibilty and adapting to customer needs is the name of the game, and you chap haven't even opened the box. :D

It was because of unmet demand for Pre-booked cabs/taxis/PHV's, call them what you will, and who was not meeting the demand? Why Hackney carriages at the time, but they didn't want more hacks being licensed so what have you got instead ... PHVs to do the work that hackneys wouldn't or couldn't do.

You can rant against PHVs all you like but they exist because of the failure of the hackney trade to serve the public and the attempt by the hackney trade to keep the golden goose all to themselves.

Do you think de-limitation would ever have even been thought about if there had not been so many Councils ( with full backing from their local Hackney Assoc ) , trying to limit numbers for so many years.
If councils had a policy of steady increase then the limits would still be in place albeit at a higher level.

Too many hackney owners can only think of their own short term ££££

Well done someone got there, I have said this for years, we have 2 tier system because of the short sighted greed of many of the plate holders in the past. Gradual expansion and growth is what I have advocated for years but this middle ground is very sparsely populated. The most vocal group are the have-nots, the Delimit/Dereg lot. We know this is bad for the trade, bad for the public no redeeming features. Every new plate just means more conjestion at town centre ranks and less service in the provinces. Gradual expansion, zoning, peak time restriction lets look at options that are sustainable and benefit the community. I got my Plate from the waiting list, I put my time in, that should always be thw starting point you make a contibution before you reap the benefits.

Who is this we?

If it's the plate-holders in restricted areas, then it is a tiny we.

By your own admission T. , you're accepting that PHVs are doing what Hackneys should have done if they had not had their collective heads where the sun doesn't shine. Therefore what is your problem with PHVs then?
If they had all been called hackneys doing the exact same job that would be OK would it? You also complain that " the most vocal group are the have-nots ", but don't you realise that people like me could easily have a Hackney if we wanted one, we just don't want to sit on ranks thank you very much.
We really are 2 sides of one coin and the sooner you realise that, the happier you will be. We have many more issues that unite us and only a few competition issues that divide us. The sooner we have a single tier taxi licensing regime the better ( with grandfather rights to all PHVs) ! :)

We have ph going hack. Hack going PH so not a lot changes.

But the outer areas demand is usually fed by the ph, and the downtown by the likes of me.

I don't have a problem with PHV, my problem is with Delimit/Dereg and the damage that it is doing to the trade. Too many are hell bent on getting a free plate and in the process will make it worthless. I mean worthless in its working value, not any rarity value. There is not an infinite supply of customers for an infinite number of plates. Market forces do not produce the best result for user or driver. Look at the bus fiasco. If the free market was so good why were regulations and restrictions introduced in the first place. We must stop being a rabble and become a business.

Well there aren't restrictions on PH and they seem to do reasonably ok, so wont Hac's work out the same?

Ie although you've got a cartel and monopoly and that's lining your pockets that's still not good enough for you.

I suspect you're making a very handsome income compared to most in the trade, yet still you want more?

A real taxi version of Tesco.

Shame!

A monopoly cannot be a cartel, Doh, subtitles needed for the hard of thinking!

No, market forces do not solve the problems created by Delimit/Dereg. Oversupply in City centres and hot spots, little or no service elswhere being the most obvious. I hate to repeat it so often but look at the buses and to a lesser extent the railways.

I look at the buses and see a service tens times better than before 1985.

I look at the trains and see a service vastly improved since the end of BR.

Still I look forward to your stats and facts to prove me otherwise.
