 Post subject: Regional Taxiboards?

A number of bodies are mooting the idea of regional taxiboards based loosely along the geography of the proposed regional governments.

The basis of some of the argument against the OFT has been that taxis are a local matter for locals to decide. There is an apparent contridiction.

I'm not sure if this item should be placed on the OFT bit of the site, but the OFT seem to have brought it into discussion again, so i've put it here.

Any thoughts?

The bit that really makes sense, :? :? :? is the bit about making them responsible for driver's appeals.

What a great idea, hundreds of appeals from all over the country being decided by driver's.

Biased, surely not !!!

your right sussex, but left to this site i think we'd hang em high :lol:

the geography doesnt work, and dont make sense, the taxi trade is too different from area to area.

I suspect a hidden agenda somewhere

But i think the OFT has showed the trade of the strange alliances that have been made, and it may well come off to the detrement of the entire trade.

Strange alliances, an anti DDA saloon car, anti private hire brigade, with a body that encourages the use of WAV's and limited growth of the hack trade.

Something will break somewhere along the line

Regional government is the ideal place for transport policy and not just taxis, but wait a minute, we have to aggree to it in a referendum first or there will be no regional government.

jumping the gun here.

you right there mick, regional government is far from a foregone conclusion, they way the publics [edited by admin] off with politicians at the moment dont think people will bear another form of government, to be honest.

if it regionalisation did come about, and i stress if, i cant see it working to the advantage of the taxi and private hire trades.

over in the north east for example, between newcastle and sunderland i think there are 6 different local authorities, all with differing versions of cab laws, none of the local trades would be willing to give what they have up and neither would the licensing authorities.

Another example would be the north west, where regional government would go from the scottish border to cheshire, nearly 200 miles in distance, with very different wishes from the trade. imagine the hassle trying to get a rank! of a fare increase.

Locals are far better deciding, i think. perhaps a longer term objective.

Yeah, I think you are right there. And do we NEED another tier of Government?

While I do think there are aspects of the cab industry that would benefit from a national legislative framework, Eg. Consistency in CRB checks, vehicle standards, driver licensing etc, there are also aspects that must be dealt with on a local basis, such as the knowledge tests, rank provision, and any rate setting.

For example, you could use the Formulae, enforced by a National Act, but with responsibility handed to the local authority to make alterations that affect the more local issues.

the major probel , so far as i see it, is that the people spouting for regional boards, national cab acts etc, want to replace what we currently have, with all its imperfections, for the unknown.

the taxi trade varies on a county level, on a regional level it would be larger and possibly harder to control. In the end the finance aspect alone will cost us all more money for another tier of red tape and men in suits deciding our future.

its easy to see why the t&g, scata and the nwta would want such a thing, but all for different motives, were the ones that will get shafted in the end.

at least now if you have a problem you can go somewhere local.

neither the t&g nor scata can tell us how their single tiers will actually work if demand increases in any area, limiting private hire and hacks?

the trade is to complex from town to town to use a large brush.

the way things work out with government anyway and these ideas is that you start off trying to please everyone, and end up pleasing no-one.

leave well alone

and for f**** sake give sussex a plate
