Can anyone in Edinburgh give me details of the roll of the Edinburgh cab office?

I need to know how many of those who work at the cab office are connected to the local police force?

In what way are they connected?

Are they bone fide qualified police officers?

Are they contracted solely to the council and are they are paid by the council?

I also need to ask if anyone knows the name of the outfit who conducted the public attitude questionnaire for Jacobs consulting because it sure wasn't Jacobs themselves. I suppose there is every possibility that it could have been a similar outfit to the one that did the questionnaire for TPI in Plymouth. lol.

Regards

JD

For the benefit of the record, Edinburgh no longer has a cab office.
I'm sure your little friend Jasbar Taylor can keep you right so why ask publicly? Or don't you trust him anymore?

The question arose because of a discussion I had with the cab office the other day.

It would seem all Cab office personnel are paid employees of the council and I just wondered how independent a person can be when they are paid by the council to do a specific job. The discussion I had was with relation to the old Jacobs survey whereby Jacobs stated they consulted the police as stake holders but the police declined to comment and instead referred them to the cab office.

The status of the cab office officers was something I was trying to determine, considering they are paid by the council?

There lies the reason for my request for information in respect of the cab office.

I am surprised you say they no longer exist but perhaps you mean the cab office no longer exists but the officers do?

Regards

JD

Edinburgh has a Taxi Examination Centre. Substantially is only role is now enforcement, particularly vehicular, all licensing matters are now with the council.

As I understand it, the only police employee is the Cab Inspector, the remainder of the staff are civilians, although one is known also to be, or have been, a special constable.

PHC go to the taxi examination centre. It also deals with vehicle examination for at least one other local authorities in the area, I believe Midlothian.

TBH if they didn't do it in the same place then they would be accused of wasting money. :?

Not got a problem with them being tested in the same place it is what they have called that place what is wrong with taxi and phc examination centre why just call it taxi examination centre that only hardens in public mind that they are one and the same and we know that they are different.

But how many members of the public are going to be in a position to be confused?

all the ones that read the edinburgh evening news who always call phc taxis it just seems a bit much for hackney guys to complain that no one knows the difference then allow the examination centre name to be inacurate.

Rightly or wrongly, you say wrongly, I say rightly, in the last 20 years I have never called for a customer with the words 'private hire'. :D

And as far as I'm aware no-one has ever called our office and booked a private hire vehicle. :D

Now I know they get one, and I know I am one, but that's the knub and it ain't going to change.

you got the wrong end of the stick there Sussex i dont say either rightly or wrongly i just remember guys going on about not allowing phc to do the things hackneys can do like pick up the street. i dont judge whether this is right or wrong that is just the way it is but the press continue to call phc taxis when they are not and now it seems Edinburgh council no longer make the distinction when it comes to testing vehicles. maybe this is the thin end of the wedge?

Indeed it is the thin end of that wedge, but my point is really there's nothing that can be done about it. 99% or more of our customers think a PH is a taxi.

I fully understand taxi drivers getting the hump over it, especially in the like of London where there is a massive difference in driver's standards, but we are where we are.
