Taxi drivers in crime crackdown
Taxi drivers in Liverpool and Sefton are working with Merseyside police to tackle serious crime.
Cabbies are piloting an alert system which means appeals for help can be sent on text messages to the drivers' communication screen.

Merseycabs, Delta Taxis and Seaforth Radio Cabs will receive the descriptions and registration numbers of vehicles the police want to trace.

Delta says the scheme has been working informally for a while.

About 2,000 taxi drivers have signed up for the scheme.

It is being trialled in Liverpool and Sefton, but it is hoped it will be rolled out across the rest of the Merseyside region in the near future.

Out and about

Supt Ian Pilling, who helped set up the scheme, said: "Taxi drivers are valuable members of our community, they are our eyes and ears across Merseyside."

The police said cabbies had been helping them with information in an informal way for some time by calling in when they spotted an incident taking place.

A taxi driver for six years, Mr McLoud is one of the hundreds of drivers taking part in Taxi Alert.

He said: "I think it is a great idea and I am pleased to be taking part. We already regularly work with police because we are out and about, we see things as they are unfolding.

"This is just an extension of what we do already."

Not you Mr T .Suppose they do catch one the dad boys, with this system . Ironing board and a set off testicles, comes to mined. Don’t say they wont find out, they always do . streetcars

It's a pity that some police forces have a poor response rate when it comes to hackney carriage and private hire drivers who are in serious trouble. Perhaps cab drivers should get some assurances from the police that their assistance will be reciprocal?

Sefton and Liverpool hackney trade has had a good relationship with the police for quite a few years it is now expanding to the private hire. we not only work in these districts we also live in them. the same people that burgle your houses jump out of cabs without paying , they also steal cars sometimes they belong to us. and as for any of them knowing that I have something to do with it I couldn't care less. if they're off the streets than the streets are safe....
p.s. I have a press and that's even better,

p.p.s...The police on a number of occasions over the last few years have informed both hackney and private hire when children have gone missing 3000 more set of eye's in these cases come in very handy, ask the parents when the children of found.

Round about 2 years ago we had a meeting with the chief superintendent of Nottinghamshire police regarding some issues, he suggested working together with the trade, his words were we are the eyes and ears on the street, needless to say we all sat there gob smacked.

We get asked to keep our eyes open when it's a serious crime or a kiddies gone missing.

Bet you all did !! Is this the same police force whose Chief issued a very public statement around that time saying that his force were unable to cope and that gun crime was out of control? Let me tell you something my friend, in the eyes of the police and other public bodies we are considered to be an underclass. To quote the words of a Northumbria Police detective to a perfectly co-operative, law abiding citizen, "Taxi drivers are just criminals who have not been caught yet".

Don't know where that one came from. Our boss agreed to assist in tracing lost and vulnerable members of the public, kiddies and pensioners, which he confirmed on a BBC Radio Merseyside interview. Then the newspapers warn the criminal world that taxi drivers are out to get them.

It would seem, that there are loads of criminals, driving Liverpool cabs. Nut jobs go before the appeals panel, very often with a representative . The panel gets drunk, on the power they have, they think there God .The result, criminals, driving cabs. Dont beleive me. Here are a few examples, from the latest panel meeting . Surely this does not happen anywhere else . 6286 wounding with intent to do G B H. 6285 handling stolen goods and a drugs offence. 6287 soliciting a person for prostitution . All have got or kept there Licenses . If Jack the ripper applied for a Liverpool taxi license, i have no dout he would get one .What s the point of a c r b. When tosspot panels think they know best.
