Private Hire and Taxi Exhibition

Calderdale and Kirklees taxi licensing teams have been working together to look at ways of helping taxi drivers to stay safer.

On Tuesday, May 8, taxi and private hire drivers from all over the area will be attending an exhibition specifically geared at improving driver safety.

A variety of safety equipment and systems will be on show at the exhibition, which will be held at Huddersfield Sports Centre.

Amongst the safety equipment on display will be New York yellow cab-style Perspex shields, separating the driver from the passenger compartment.

New equipment enabling passengers to pay with chip and pin, rather than cash will also be on show.

Other stands at the exhibition will feature: West Yorkshire Police, Calderdale Council’s Disability Awareness staff, training providers, including Calderdale College and a company offering a booking-by-text service. A number of vehicles will also be on display.

Calderdale Council says the event highlights a serious issue.

“In the UK over the past 15 years, 40 taxi drivers have died at the hands of their passengers”, said a Council spokesperson

“This is an opportunity for taxi and private hire drivers to see some of the ways in which they can protect themselves as well as being able to meet officers from both Calderdale and Kirklees licensing teams”.

Calderdale recently joined with the Health and Safety Executive to run a successful seminar and training event for taxi drivers, advising them on the best ways to stay safe.

More information about the event can be obtained from Deborah Bragg, Licensing Officer, Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council – 01422 393093 – deborah.bragg@calderdale.gov.uk.

The event is being held at Huddersfield Sports Centre on Tuesday, May 8, between 10.00am and 4.00pm. Reporters/photographers are cordially invited to attend.
