Taxi Driver Beaten To Death After Row

A minicab driver has been beaten to death after a row with a man and a woman, it emerged today.

Mohamed Ali Maslah, a father of five, was found dead dead next to his Vauxhall minicab outside a block of flats in Islington, north London, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Earlier he had been involved in an argument with a man and a woman.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "Police were informed of an assault in Sherborne Street, outside McIndoe Court - a block of flats.

"The 41 year old victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He is a married man with five children all under the age of 11."

No arrests have yet been made.

This safety issue is really getting beyond a joke now, its about time the Government steps in and overrides this "councillor's know best syndrome" and leaves it up to drivers to implement their own security fail-safes. Providing they are legal.

How do we set up a petition similar to the type, that "We the undersigned" demand that the government do something about it. i.e subsidized CCTV to help for a kick off.

Also how do we find out the stats on this for the - say last 10 years.

This is mad - no one else is going to do anything about it, lets start the ball rolling.

I think that if this were to happen in any other profession there would be an outcry. eusasmiles.zip

It just goes to show how far down the political food chain taxi drivers really are. eusasmiles.zip

And some would rather pander to politicians than confront them with the real issues. You don't ask you demand, and if they don't meet your demands you go to war-together.

This murder is a prime example of what can happen when you kiss people on the ar** for a living. eusasmiles.zip

Taxi drivers need to stop apologizing for their very existence and especially to politicians. :-|

From time to time we get queries from other members as to what trade union Tom,Dick,or Harry belongs to, and my attitude is to say - no point in belonging to one as they are like having a dog with no teeth.

Well! this is a prime example, what are the Trade Unions doing to protect their members in this situation - are they lobbying Councils or Politicians regarding this serious situation? :roll: :roll: :roll:

For far too long Trade unions and trade bodies have been preoccupied with one thing only and that is trying to convince councils to retain quantity controls. It is only recently that the NTA and other bodies have started to raise the profile of the increasing dangers to taxi drivers in a unified voice. However in many areas including Manchester the voices of those who are supposed to represent the Taxi trade are silent. The syndrome here is don't rock the boat or the council will deregulate. The word deregulation has a shackling effect on areas that are hostage to council inaction.

A couple of years ago there were threats to blockade St Andrews while the main daytime rank was relocated while the bus station was being developed (this made the lead story in the local weekly).

A while later our main night rank was reduced from about 20 to 10 spaces (and even 20 wasn't enough at times!) while the number of taxis was going through the roof.

But not a peep from the association this time round, probably because they managed to get the council to cap numbers in between times. And also because our 'spokesman' doesn't even work nights.

The council has recently spent a fortune extending our other rank at the bus station,but this has been a complete waste of time because the new spaces are in front of the station exit, so drivers won't use the new spaces because the punters just jump into the car nearest to the exit, so the whole thing is a waste of space (literally) and money.

Any of the regular drivers could have told the council that, but I believe that only the 'yes men' were consulted, who in any case try not to use that rank if they can help it. :-|
