As the Taxi trade flounders in an ever perpetuating cycle of uncertainty what ever happened to the concept of strength through unity?

Who can unite a taxi trade divided? Could it be Wayne Casey and the NTA with its blinkered view on quantity controls and the exclusion of certain elements of the taxi trade from plying for hire on lucrative cab ranks? Or can it be the GMBU with its motley crew of individuals who mean well but appear to be void of any meaningful ideas that might draw people to their cosmopolitan banner of non prejudice?

In my opinion and from what I have seen none of them can unite the trade but that doesn't mean the prospect of unity is lost forever.

Regards

JD

I nominate me. :D

Everyone loves me, and I love everyone else. Image

On a less serious note, the problem we all have is that their aren't that many of us with long term plans, or with a tad of foresight.

So what we have are unions/associations who, in the main, mean well, but they can only just see past the end of their hooters.

And what this trade needs are folks who can look and plan for the next 10/20 years.

And I'm your man. :D

Perhaps the LTDA should go national?

There's a growing organisation that's there for the drivers.

But outside the smoke it's the owners that count, not the drivers :?

It certainly could be less divided, but I doubt if it will ever be united.

I think that just reflects our more divided and individualistic society - let's face it, there's less and less honour between drivers on the streets these days, and that just reflects society generally.

The trade will always be divided by the numbers issue (although of course the fact that the local associations tend to represent the vested interests means that superficially it may look united) and even if it disappeared that would cause lingering resentment, so in effect it's a no-win situation.

We have an association in East Fife, but since there's so much bickering and it's every driver for himself on the roads I'm not a member and don't go to the meetings.

One of the association stalwarts has accused me (and others) a couple of times about being good at shooting our mouths off on the ranks but don't come to the meetings.

So I put the above to him and the best he can come up with is that the conflict doesn't matter because it's all about getting together to fight the council, so we don't have to like each other.

This seems a bit hypocritical to me.

An example from the weekend - I was about third from the front of the rank and a passing taxi stopped to pick up a flagger, and was so close to the front car that the road was blocked while he was stopped.

It might surprise you but Manchester has the same problem. There is no eticate anymore and it's now a case of do unto others as others do unto you. I suspect the practice is wide spread.

Yup, I agree they are the biggest waste of time and effort, I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. Went to 2 meetings, paid my subs, filled in contact details, email address etc.. so I could be kept up to date.... Last I ever heard of them.

If they can't even keep those that wanted to support the association informed as to the comings and goings, then what are they doing other than drinking coffee once a month and complaining to each other.

What was it that Neil in the Young Ones said about Leonard Cohen?

Dead, yet still alive?
