I'm suspicious on why a training school should be set up in Prague for people wishing to be taxi drivers in the UK though.

I'm also interested to know how the operators in the UK contact, or are contacted by the people on the course ........................ and who pays for all of the training, flights over to the UK and accommodation.

Do you go to work and do your job to the best of your ability?

Surely you want everyone to attain the high standards that you do?

That is a sad situation, but from my experience it's many of the benefit folks that are driving cabs on the quiet.

firstly there is no-one knowingly working at my office that are on benefits !

each month we have to do are drivers returns to the council and inturn they ca be viewed by the revenue and have been in the pasts so them days have gone as far as i believe in the offices that run farley

who ever asked about training in foreign countries does it make sense for them to have little to travel why they train and cheaper accommodation that in UK while they participate ?

i seen a class of twenty widdled down to only six because of the standards of the school and the way it works is we supply the maps and stationary and well known locations of the area while they conduct a 1 Month course.

when they do arrive here it cost the me £1000 per person for that service ! so do you think i would go to this bother if i did not have to ?

i would happily have local free drivers, but needs must i am afraid

OH and when they get here they know more about this area than most local applicants. they have medicals and CRB back for full life translated

so as i have already said i myself was against this but have been turned upside down by their attitude to work and politeness to customers.

so if you have not experience them maybe you should not be making comment on them as its people like that who are simply making others dislike them for no reason other than gossip !!

Why is it that for many years I have heard from folks in your manor that the trade was dead?

Why not offer them the £1,000 to come and join your gang?

TDO would it be correct to guess you are a single hackney driver ?

Yes, and I said as much further up the thread.

Quote:
you can argue what you want my friend, it is my belief that you do not have the need to recruit staff to meet the demand of the needs ! and if you did you my be of a different view !

Quite right, but the reason I've never gone down that road is that in my manor at least hired drivers are earning at or below the minimum wage and generally only do it as a part-time job or while they're looking for a proper job and/or because they don't have to pay tax.

So I don't go down that route because (a) it demonstrates all that's wrong with the trade in many areas and (b) I'd just be making it worse by taking on more drivers.

However, most proprietors/operators in my area are still desperate for new drivers, even if most the current ones are sitting around doing Jack for most of the day.

Quote:
i myself will confess to having been of the same mind of yourself only two years ago !! but after visiting the training school for this people and meeting them they turned my view up side down on how polite and keen to work they are.

Well I haven't disputed that.

Quote:
i will also say i do not employ these drivers they simply hire cars of me in the same way any driver does and what money they make is theirs after deductions !! they are at my office treat the same as any other driver

Either way you're still profiting from them, so what difference does their employment status make?

Quote:
but if you were receiving 9 to 10 thousand calls in one day and failing to answer 2 thousand and out of the 8 thousand you do answer then tell another 2 thousand your fully booked. and unable to get the correct applicant through the doors from locally you might investigate and recruit form abroad

I can't recall disputing the needs of your business or your business model?

And if things are so rosy why can't you get indigenous drivers to do the work? Maybe it's not as rosy a job as you make out?

And coming back to the main point that I was making, your strategy will make the job even less attractive to local drivers?

As I said, you complain about drivers looking at the job as a stepping stone, but you're in effect making the situation worse with your recruitment strategy, at least as far as local drivers are concerned.

What I'm trying to get across is the economic effects of immigration, and while some in the trade clearly see it as a source of cheap labour
Well i do not know where you are based :?: .Where i am as far as i know we are all self employed and so are the drivers from overseas,so i do not understand the cheap labour side of your view regarding the taxitrade and drivers from other countries, because as i say we are all on an even keel.

Well I'm clearly not talking about a wage packet at the end of the week, but what it comes down to with immigrant labour is that they're willing to work for less (whether self-employed or otherwise) an to that extent are more profitable to those hiring them.

If Mr S is recruiting more drivers then clearly his current drivers will be earning less, so what's in it for Mr S?

I know we have all wandered off the original thread, but what do you mean?

Firstly I would like to say that I have no objection to people from other countries working in this country, or vice versa, but I do expect that the rules that apply to myself should obviously apply to them.

There has been references made to the 'Auf Wiedersehn Pet' scenario of workers, but what must be remembered is that the trades people, joiners, bricklayers, plasterers etc. were employed in the building industry, which meant that their employers deducted the equivalent in tax and insurance from their wages, which cannot be said for self-employed taxi drivers over here. Also, the main source of manual labour was recruited from Turkey.

Statements have been made regarding earnings of 10-35 pounds p.h. but nothing has been said regarding the cost of vehicle and radio e.g. if a driver worked Monday to Friday for 5-8 hour shifts, what would the costs be and how much would he earn?

A company with 400 cars that is expanding to meet demand; is that demand being created by charging cheaper fares than their competitors, and in turn, has this had the effect that drivers earnings have reduced dramatically, thus causing the shortage of indiginous drivers?

I think the P.H industry is growing and will continue to grow as the majority of people are having to pull their purse strings in due to rising household costs(mortgages, utility bills etc.)I believe that this is a major factor why more people are turning to P.H and also the never ending rises in hack fares. Therefore what is wrong with a business looking after its own interests and providing a service that the majority of people find that they can afford. And if the demand is there and the existing drivers stay then something must be working right.

Thats my opinion anyway

The complainants were probably the ones doing it, but we usually manage to weed them out in the end.

Problem is that it's difficult to control without having an inquisition every time someone registers, but the problem seems to be worst on the forums that you talk about.

So what if they do, or you do, or anyone else does? :?

From my experience the easiest way to pi** people off on one forum is to mention the lies from another one.

I don't disagree with most of your post, but as for drivers staying maybe they have nowhere to go and bills to pay, you often hear the expression we are keeping the rates low to encourage work, it is funny the way it is allways the driver that has to give the discount and never the people owning the company , the principle is to ( keep the drivers hungry for work )

I once had a tax inspector locked in a room with me for two-and-a-half hours, I really felt sorry for the man , he was never the same.
