I don't know of any supermarket that sells alcohol after midnight. How many pubs are actually open "round the clock"? There are none around my area. Some are open later than they used to be but you can't seriously expect anyone to believe that just because you are able to buy drinks later that anyone suddenly has more money to spend so that they can buy more than they used to? In my experience the only change to drinking habits has been that people go out later in the evening and spend the same amount of money.

Tesco and Asda in our area = 24 hours. The youngsters do not as such have more money to spend, but are racking up debt on credit/debit cards because they do not want to be seen by their mates to be any less a person. I understand your reasoning about people going out later, but that tends to be the older or more responsible person.

Tesco and asda may be open 24 hours but I think you will find that they stop selling alcohol at midnight.

Thursday morning this week I took 5 passengers after a night out at Approx 3.50 a.m Asdas - trust me on that one. Ironically they shut early on a Sat and Sun night.

However the issue was not about 24 hour availability. If you now look at shopping habits, people are now stacking up on cans and wine because they are so much cheaper than the pubs and clubs who charge £3 to £4 per half pint bottle. The bottom line is that they have always got something in the fridge, and that is where I am coming from.

I go back to my original posting, this is where they have the 4/5 cans, bottle of wine before they go out. It makes sense, it is so much cheaper.

I am starting to sound like an advert for supermarkets, if we are not careful we will end up with a bunch of alki taxi drivers.

Hardly a recent phenomenom though?

How do people get into this kind of state in the first place. We have laws that say that you can't serve alcohol to someone who is drunk yet when was the last time you ever heard of a publican or bartender getting done for this?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We started off with someone chucking up in someones cab - we have now covered "Supermarkets" "Publicans" "24 hour drinking," but ! no one has yet to take to task the villain.

The villain - Mr and Mrs/Miss/Ms J Public, and the bottom line is that nobody forced it down their necks.

I think what some have to realise is that if these people want to get hammered, then all they have got to do is to send a mate to the bar.

Does that ring any bells, so contrary to what some might perceive to be a licensing problem, it is not always the case.

I've finished with this post  I am starting to feel sick myself.

About 18 months ago a local cabbie was taking some drunken Army lads back to Barracks one of them started causing problems he stopped the car and ordered the army lad out then continued back to barracks with the rest.

The following morning the lad that was chucked out of the taxi was found dead at the side of the road having been hit by another car (a taxi as it turned out but that is another story and has been covered on here)

The point is if you throw the passenger out of the taxi in a drunken state you are probably putting them in harms way and possibly even risking your livelihood. Sometimes in this game you do need to put the passengers safety ahead of your own convenience

You would need to be a great grandad to remember when they were closed

I was about to agree with you, but I then looked at your post in total.

The lad concerned was causing problems!

At what point do we allow someone to compromise the safety of ourselves and other passengers, by constantly distracting the driver from the road in front.

I personally think that you have got to call it as you think.

At the end of the day there has to come a point where people are responsible for their own actions. They have a duty of care to themselves.
We have a duty of care to our passengers, ourselves and everyone else on the roads, not just the stupid f*ckwits who choose to jepordise their own and everyone else's safety.
