Limo driver guilty of rape

A STRETCH limo driver who raped a teenage virgin in Hounslow has been warned to expect a substantial prison sentence.

Kevin Kalyan was found guilty by a jury last Thursday after denying the attack.

The incident, which occurred more than three years ago, received wide publicity for the police hunt at the time, but it was a routine DNA check which finally nailed Kalyan.

When the 17-year-old victim, who lives in nearby Isleworth, reported the rape the next day in February 2002, the police thought they were looking for a white man of about 38 years driving a white saloon car.

Kalyan, who lives in Ilford, is part Asian, was 22 at the time and was driving a white stretch limo when he picked the girl up outside Shannon's Irish pub in Hounslow High Street.

He was arrested three years later having been stopped in Swindon for not wearing a seat-belt. A computer check revealed he was wanted for rape.

The indignant Kalyan gave an expletive-filled interview to police claiming the girl had flagged him down for sex. He admitted he had "done it before".

"Yeah," he told police, "in Leicester Square, you get birds coming up to the car and you end up having sex with them you talk to any limo driver it happens all the time."

But the youngster's story was very different. She had been for a night out with friends and called a minicab firm which told her there would be a "bit of a wait".

She waited. The car drew up and she thought it was her cab, prosecutor Constance Briscoe told Isleworth Crown Court.

She got into the back but before her friends could get in, Kalyan drove off. He went round the corner to School Road, where he got into the back and raped her.

When he got out to return to the driver's seat, she escaped and ran back to her friends.

"She was crying and she was bleeding and she told her best friend she had been raped."

She was later examined by Dr Anna Lewandowska, who gave the court graphic details of horrendous genital injuries which, she said, were consistent with sexual assault.

She said: "Just looking and counting the injuries, this is most likely that sexual intercourse was forced without consent."

Kalyan, a married father-of-two, now aged 25, told the court: "We had a very flirtatious conversation. The next thing I knew she was in the back. She didn't ask for a cab and I didn't say I was a cab. We were all over each other. We were going to drive round the corner to have sex in that car.

"I centrally locked the car. We were both there for the same reason we had a fondle and we had sex and then we picked up her friend and I drove them home."

Kalyan was remanded in custody for reports and will be sentenced in November.

Judge Richard McGregor-Johnson said "custody is inevitable".

Limousine left lifeless by blaze

Burnt out shell: Fire is being treated as suspicious.
This blackened shell of a car is the burnt-out remains of a 44ft limousine that was destroyed by fire.

Two fire engines were summoned to the scene near Hanover Road in the early hours of Tuesday, August 1, where they used high pressure hoses to tackle the blaze.

The vehicle's owner said the the one-of-a-kind 1986 Ford Lincoln was built for the Disney Corporation and was used to take President Gerald Ford into Washington Town Centre to watch the 3D version of Fantasia.

He added that he only had third party insurance on the car so will not be able to replace it.

A spokesman at Wimbledon fire station said the cause of the fire was under investigation and was being treated as suspicious.

Police are appealing for people to come forward with information about the incident. Call on 020 8649 3191.

An interesting couple of stories. I can't see a problem with the insurance issue. You can have hire and reward insurance that is only third party. I was offered both third party and comprehensive insurance for my taxis.
The first story is more interesting. Which paper was this in. Obviously an old story but still worrying. Do you have any follow up story regarding the sentance?

A brutal rapist snared by his DNA two years after assaulting a 17 year old virgin he had picked up in his bogus minicab was jailed today for six years.

Kevin Kalyan, 26, boasted in police interviews that his car was "an extension of his dick" and referred to his motor as a "disco on wheels".

But DNA taken during a routine traffic police stop showed him to be a wanted sex attacker.

After his victim climbed into what she believed was a minicab in Hounslow High Street in February, 2002, Kalyan, a married father of two, drove off leaving her friend standing by the roadside.

He drove along a secluded lane where he savagely took his victim's virginity.

Doctors' evidence showed she was left brusied, bleeding and traumatised by the attack.

Evil Kalyan pleaded not guilty, saying his victim was a prostitute and had been "up for it".

Sentencing him at Isleworth Crown Court, Judge Richard McGregor-Johnson said the force used was an aggravating feature.

He said: "What you did was to take advantage of a 17 year old girl. You ignored her protests and you ignored the severe pain you caused, which would have been obvious.

"The aggravating features were that the act of intercourse was extremely forceful, and locking the doors was very unpleasant.

"I sentence you to a custodial term of six years, with an extension to the licence of three years.

"You will be subject indefinitely to feature on the Sex Offenders Register, and you will be disqualified from working with children."

Kalyan will serve just over three years, having spent just four weeks in custody since his conviction in October. As a member of the Sex Offenders Register he will have to declare himself to police before leaving the country.

Because of the victim's age he has also been banned from working with children.

Investigating office Det Sgt Martin Cole said he had been hoping for a longer sentence.

He said: "To be honest I was hoping for a slightly longer sentence, but the extended licence means he will have to be on his best behaviour when he comes out."

He said he did not believe this was Kalyan's first rape. He said: "My concern is that given the circumstances, what other opportunities were there? My view is that the indications are that this was not an opportunist attack, this was someone who had done this before."

He appealed to other women who believe they may have been attacked to call police as soon as possible

Re the ongoing debate over terminology, this article refers to Kalyan as a "bogus minicab driver", and another uses "fake cab driver" in the healine.

Thus we could conceviably have discussed the story without highlighting the limo aspect at all.

Teenage girl in cab rape terror

A TEENAGE virgin was picked up by a bogus minicab in Hounslow driven to a side road and brutally raped a court heard this week.
Fourteen hours later when seen by a doctor she was still bleeding torn bruised and very distressed prosecutor Constance Briscoe told Isleworth Crown Court.

The 17-year-old from Isleworth spent the evening in Hounslow with two friends and was waiting for a cab she had called outside Shannon's Irish Pub in the High Street said counsel.

"She had been told there would be a bit of a wait. She waited until a vehicle turned up and the driver asked whether she wanted a cab. She thought it was the cab she had ordered and got into the back and called for her friends to come along said Ms Briscoe.
But when she got in the cab moved off. She thought it was going to pick up her friends but it just drove off she went on.

The vehicle drove a few yards into School Road. The driver got out and got into the back next to the youngster. He tried to kiss her and she pushed him off several times. Then he grabbed her wrists forced her arms above her head and leaned across her body pinning her down. She was trapped. As she struggled she knew she was going to be raped.

"She told him she was only 13 hoping that might stop him. But he went on to rape her said Ms Briscoe. She had been drinking and did not have the strength to go on struggling. But she was hurting badly and blood was running down her legs. She was not feeling too good.

"As he finished he released her from his body weight and got out to return to the driver's seat. She took the opportunity to escape and ran back to where her friends were waiting.

"She was crying and told her best friend she had been raped said counsel.

The friend waited until the next day to tell the girl's father, who called the police in.

A medical examination confirmed she had injuries consistent with rape including bruising and abrasions to her breasts and legs. The cuts to her private parts looked fresh and were still bleeding some 14 hours after the attack said counsel.

In the dock is Kevin Kalyan, 26, of Lea Street, Ilford, who denies raping the young woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, on the night of February 10, 2002.

There was an extensive investigation, but Kalyan was not caught until stopped on the M4 near Swindon for failing to wear a seat-belt three years later. A check on the police computer revealed that he was wanted and he was arrested and charged later that night, February 23 this year.

The trial continues.

What kind of state must she have been in if she thought that a stretched limo was a mini cab? It is no wonder it took 2 years to catch him. He was described as being white, 38 years old and driving a saloon car. He was actually part asian, 22 years old and driving a limo. He was caught after a routine DNA test???????? When do they do routine DNA tests?
Amazing that doing something as stupid as not wearing your seatbelt can catch you out. Personally I don't think 6 years was enough. it should have been more just for his arrogance.
