Just to add some fuel to the fire.....this point has been raised on another website....I think its quite interesting....its from that goold auld OFT report;

Point 1.27

A taxi can only ply for hire inside the local authority area where it is licensed. However, it can supply private hire services on the same basis as a PHV – i.e. it can pick up and drop off anywhere in the country, as long as the order for services comes to a business basewithin the area where the taxi is licensed. The use of mobile telephones by taxi drivers as a means of accepting private hire bookings is technically not allowed outside the area where the taxiis licensed. However, this is difficult to police and presumably does happen.

I don't know who wrote that but a hackney carriage is not subject to the 1976 Local Government miscellaneous provisions act. Who said so, why no others than Justice Collins and Justice Silber in the Gladen case.

I suppose its not surprising that the OFT made that mistake because every council in England and Wales made the same mistake for years. Until Gladen came along that is.

Did Carlisle charge you by any chance?
