The vehicles which run best on it are those which have a fuel pump and injectors. Anything which runs on a common rail system tends to fur (block/grease) up as time goes on. It leaves a residue similar to hand cleaner in consistency........ fuel pumps which are electronically controlled can go ape at any time when run on pure vegetable oil.

If your engine is of the common rail type would it be best not to use veg oil or bio diesel or would it mean that you needed to programme a cleaning of the rail into your maintenance schedule? If so after how many miles or litres?

I do keep a record though...Just incase I get asked about the amount I use.
So do I. It may be veg oil but as I use it for fuel, I'm claiming it as fuel through the books. :D

One other thought. I've noticed that the engine is a little harder to start in the mornings now that it's colder. It turns over 3 or 4 times instead of starting immediately as it does when the weather is better. No probs once it's started. I've switched to a 25% mix and that has solved the problem. I will probably stay with this ratio until the spring. This may not be a problem for those of you farther south.

Vegetable oil as you buy from a supermarket contains the soaps and fat's. it is these which causes waxing it clogs up your fuel filter... if you make Bi0- diesel yourself and remove the fat's you'll lessen the risk of breakdown... the more you dilute it with ordinary diesel especially during the winter makes for better running with a common rail system..... if you can make a heat exchanger that will warm up the fuel before it reaches the filter that will also help....... I have personally run my own vehicle on 100 per cent Bio fuel... but I always make sure that I run it through a fuel filter as it goes into my tank.. it is much easier to change a fuel filter at home or in your garage than on a motorway when you break down..... even running vegetable oil through a fuel filter must take some of the rubbish out of it....... the main vehicles that seem to have problems with it are the later Ford's...... TX ones love it..and any engine that has the fuel filter built into the top of it... the fuel gets nice and warm......

I've been running my cars on veg oil for a few years now with no problems at all. My Citroen ZX, which has the XUD engine, runs far better on corn oil than it does diesel.

I'd much rather use veggie than bio diesel. I had more problems with the bio clogging my fuel filter than I ever have with veggie, and that's whilst running at 100% veg in summer.

Just my opinion, but I think the Cavalier with the 1.7td Isuzu engine is the best car to run on veggie oil. The XUD, which is used in Peugeots and Citroens, tends to run a bit lumpy when first started, but my brother's Cavalier used to run on 100% veg perfectly. Dropping to 80% in winter.

I've found that I get slightly less MPG, but at 49p per litre, it's more than worth it.

It seems to be different depending on who you speak to, some people say the engines run faster, some say they run slower, some say they get more miles per gallon, and some say they get less, but they all say it's cheaper
