Can anyone offer any advice, my best mate took a brand new Peugot 407 with 217 miles on the clock from new to be tested at York yesterday and they failed it because of tinted windows, they said they were too dark, after testing all the windows with a machine they said "sorry its a fail" he said what do I do now and the reply was change the windows or the car.

A mate of mine has had the same problem with his Chrysler Voyager.

how come that 05 plate, Kia, on the Stn rank, plated No 22, got through, you cant even see, its got pitch black windows.

How the hell can he change the window when they come like that out of the factory.
Did they test it inside the garage or outside, it should only be tested outside in natural light.
I got this information from a police officer, who regularly checks the boy racers here.
There must be loads of the 407s on the roads as taxis now, so what god given right has York testers got to fail it.
tell him to take it back to the garage and get them to test it outside, ask him to take the peugeot salesman with him

I have just sent an email to your council taxi licence department with the facts, from the police, so hopefully he will now get his licence

this is a new toy York Council have just got hold of, plus in the hands of untrained people

maybe if the light results are posted, most car glass now filters out at least 35% for starters

Correct stinky, he could also go to the police station and ask the traffic cops to test it then it will be done properly.
If you know the guy tell him to get round to the council asap to see what they now intend to do about it

It has happened here quite a few times and now there is a notice in the testing station warning drivers to not purchase the car until they have had it s windows checked out.

I very much doubt it Sussex, I cannot think of any council rules that have it in there taxi speck, only size of engine or number of doors, size of rear seat, or even the colour.

Does anyone from York know the phone number or email address of the testing station

crazy, surely a new car that leaves the factory and is road legal, if has least 4 doors and is up the local councils minimum engine size has minimum number of seat with seatbelts fitted. There is no way they should be allowed to fail the test, that is unless factories are churning out cars that are not up to road standard?

A few years ago the taxi enforcement officer here in Renfrewshire (Mr Roy Hadden) was failing vehicles for tinted windows then he realised that there was nothing in the Councils rules that forbid them. Since then they are passed as long as they are factory fitted.

I remember someone phoning him when he banned them & the reason stated was in the interests of public safety people need to be able to see clearly into vehicles to make sure drivers arent interfering with passengers. Makes you wonder why Strathclyde Police are allowed Ford Galaxy's with tinted windows ?

20) The licensed vehicle shall be fitted with windscreen glass that has a light
transmittance of 75% and all other window glass in the vehicle shall have a
light transmittance not less than 70%. Any self applied material shall be of the
same standard and shall be approved by the taxi licensing office.

York council taxi regs, regarding windows

This one has been knocking around for a few years now - didn't one of the airport PH fleets have a whole load of Galaxies fail because of it (Checker Cabs at Manchester perhaps?).

As Mr Paisley says the rationale seems to be that this "privacy glass" is a bit too private for taxis and PH vehicles.

However, the inconsistencies regarding this once again demonstrate the ludicrous situation of hundreds of LAs all making up their own rules.
