we in edinburgh have lost about 8 over the last couple of years.
dont know why thier closing.
can only sumise that thier is no money in it any more for the franchisee operator,nearly all the remaining ones have been taken over by asains.
probably becouse tesco's have effectively put them out of business in the small local grocers shops.

We have 4 in our town. 2 of them are at Tesco and Tesco express. :sad:

They're closing cos the land they are on is worth more with tons of flats on, than with a petrol station on.

Also are good friends the supermarkets are taking all the market share. :wink:

As mentioned, if someone offers the owners a cool million for say the site that was the Texaco in Clerkenwell Road (until last week) You're going to take the money.

I fill up before I get home at a local Shell in Letchworth, that way, unless I have an exceptonal run out into the sticks, I never have to fill up and que in London.

Remember the Royal Oak is still open for fuel, Taxi's only.

*GBC* Unbelievable how the licensed mini cabs tout now, isn't it? Have TOCU ever collared one?

They could collar thousands, problem is there's only a couple of dozen on the team. One arrest, and that's the arresting officer and witness off the road for hours doing the paperwork.

20 odd dedicated officers are better than nothing, but it's never going to be enough. Hulme Cross is heading a debate into Minicabs breaking the law as we type, it'll be interesting to see the results of that and whether it will direct more resources’ towards the Taxi unit.

You also have to bear in mind the mentality of a large percentage of those who drive Minicabs. They're already doing a crap job, they don't care if they're caught and fined. If TFL revoke their Minicab license, they'll be out touting the next again day regardless.

But that's what separates the underbelly of the trade, from the elite.

Tout's Cars need to be crushed on conviction.
End of.
No appeal. [-(

As a foot note, there seems to be a lot more drivers (real Taxi drivers) out at night this year?

So they're turning a blind eye to it, then. Thought so, the mini cabs obviously know this, think half the public see the green disc and think they've alright to pick up. Touting is as bad now as it was before they got licensed. Even the OB think they can legally pick up off the street. Got them brooming off the pony jobs to us at Old Billinsgate among other places now.

I did'nt say that.

I've been out with the tout squad twice now. Suffice to say they do the best with the resources that are available to them.

As they're arresting half a dozen in Muswell Hill, many thousands more operate freely throughout the rest of London.

Until someone provides more funds, that will be the way it will stay.

The public at large don't see touting as a priority Police duty.

Your reference to a lack of knowledge about the touting laws is fair, but then the law in this country is made up of a zillion acts and amendments. Unless you are using particular laws every day, the rust will soon set in. No excuse, but that's life.

Lets look at the Radio and Telegraphy act . . . :shock:

It is exactly the same down here and there lays the problem.

They are quite prepared to trade a criminal offence to potentially stop another.When I worked in Newport Gwent they caught something like 33 drivers over a two night exercise, and nothing whatsoever happened to them :shock: and I mean nothing.
