Bio fuels/Public Transport
Please find below the wording of one of the resolutions that has been submitted to the GMB Commercial Services Conference that will be taking place during Congress in June in Plymouth.


"That this Congress notes the very real danger that government support for bio fuels risks failing to deliver significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions that could be environmentally damaging.

Congress also notes the essential public service provided by the private hire and Taxi Trade.

Congress therefore agrees that as part of developing a cheaper, more efficient and integrated public transport service, while at the same time increasing the use of bio fuels, government reductions in taxation on fuel for those providing public transport is essential if the country is ever to develop a cheap, efficient and integrated public service.

Congress therefore instructs the CEC to develop a policy based on the fundamental principles outlined above that can be presented to the government at the appropriate stage".

The royal society which is Britain’s most eminent scientific organisation has made the point about the government targets, but before we have had chance to develop an argument for subsidised fuel based on the Red Diesel arrangements our poor farmers benefit from, environmentalists were arguing the point that the use of more bio fuels would lead to deforrestisation as tracts of land are cleared to grow the crops that are essential if bio fuel usage is to be developed.

So you can see a detailed debate will have to be had to arrive at a coherent policy. We then need to start talking a strategy for taking a well thought out policy forward.

Why not argue the truth, and that is diesel is the only environmentally friendly fuel that is readily available, and is cheaper to produce than petrol and that taxi owners would buy even more fuel efficient diesel taxis if the turning circle was dropped
You only have to look at Europe in fact the world, and you will find that the UK and Northern Ireland are the only two countries where diesel prices are higher than petrol :evil: :evil: :evil:

I think we should all copy the Brazilians and use sugar cane.

But will that mean we get the fattest cars in the world? :?

The petrol companies are making £1.5 million a hour and the government makes seven times as much in tax... and somebody expects them to give some of it back :lol:

If you could run your cab on fresh air, the govt would find a way to tax it.
They're not going to let this cash cow dry up.

You may well be right Gusmac, but it will not stop the GMB PDB putting forward the wishes of its members to ministers and other influential people. I do hope other organisations in our trade will take the same kind of action.
