DNA kits supplied to taxi drivers

TAXI drivers are to be issued with DNA kits to take samples if they are spat at by passengers.

They will also be given personal alarms and safety packs by police in a bid to make them feel safer.

Dave Cherrington, Chiltern's Neighbourhood Inspector, said: "Taxi drivers provide an essential service to the community but are, by virtue of their trade, vulnerable.

"By issuing them with these packs, we are making them safer and sending out a clear message to trouble makers that police and partner agencies take abuse or assaults on taxi drivers very seriously."

And the new packs have been welcomed by taxi drivers in the Chiltern area.

Masud Ahmed, chairman of Chiltern Taxi Drivers Association, said: "I am very glad that this initiative is taking place and the support from Insp Cherrington has been very encouraging.

"I'm very glad that our local officers are listening to us and helping us."
