Hmm I wonder what compo he is looking for - if you see any livery out on the road like "The Spencer Taxi Co" you will know it has been settled

Part time Merc driver blamed for Spencer cock-up.

WHEN a teenage daughter of Earl Spencer set out to see Chelsea play Arsenal she was expecting an exciting afternoon of high drama with 40,000 other football fans.

Instead, she ended up in a village in Yorkshire with a perplexed taxi driver 230 miles from the match.

The journey from the family estate at Althorp, near Northampton, should have been a straightforward 85-mile hop south down the M1 to Chelsea's Stamford Bridge stadium.

But it went wrong when the driver typed the destination into his sat-nav and then dutifully followed the instructions 146 miles north to the village of Stamford Bridge near York.

A spokesman for Earl Spencer, the brother of Diana, Princess of Wales, confirmed yesterday that the unfortunate set of circumstances befell one of his three daughters and a friend on Easter Sunday but, intriguingly, would not say which one.

The eldest is Lady Kitty Spencer, 17, who was named the most eligible girl in Britain by Tatler magazine last year. She has twin sisters Lady Eliza and Lady Amelia, aged 15.

The taxi, an E class Mercedes, had been pre-booked to take its passengers to the game, wait and then return to Althorp at a cost of pounds 300. It is believed that the fee will be refunded.

Paul Achiampong, the boss of Northampton-based Mayfair Taxis, apologised personally to the Earl.

"We do 20,000 journeys a month and mistakes do happen every now and again but I admit this is a big one,'' he said. "But the fault was with the control staff not the driver. He ended up putting Stamford Bridge into his sat-nav and it said it was in the north of England. He checked it was right and it was confirmed by the controller. I'm still trying to figure it out. It's baffling.''

The taxi firm employs around 40 drivers and the one who so assiduously followed his sat-nav was a casual weekend driver.

A colleague said: "He was chosen for the job because he drives a really nice car. In a way you can't blame him for following what the sat-nav told him, everyone does, but it's very embarrassing for the poor bloke. The other drivers are thinking of wearing Chelsea tops.''

One driver at the company has installed a notice in the back of his cab saying "Will find football ground!''

So the job was pre booked and a fee arranged, how many Merc taxis do they have running around in Northampton? Probably None. So I think we can assume that the Merc wasn't a hackney carriage but a private hire vehicle but was it licensed? We shall find out.

Regards

JD

The vehicle is licensed as private hire and the driver was Asian but I understand at least part of the blame resides with the controller because he was the person who put the details in the data head. Even so, under the normal course of communication it should have been established that the party wanted Stamford Bridge in London and not Yorkshire. What makes it even more bizarre is that the fair had already been agreed, so some barmpot at that firm new the correct destination.

Regards

JD

More relevance than you attempting to tell me about the capital’s Taxi trade. :?

It clarifies what side of the trade the driver came from.

Surprising innit?

Thanks, but I did gain a 'B' in Higher English, and as far as I'm aware, my eyesight is still 20/20.

You are allowed to post more evidence on threads.

By all accounts the passenger was 15 year old Lady Katya Spencer and her male companion. I'm afraid if I had a 15 year old daughter I would be very sceptical about letting her go to a football match 85 miles away with a companion of the same age. You never know where they might end up? lol

Ditto. But isn't that the society we're living in; No parental responsibility, blame the service provider!
