Running them all day on LPG is no good for an engine, they like the lubrication properties of petrol.

Petrol is a spirit, it strips oil off parts....and it shouldnt get on parts which need lubrication anyway, it should only be in the induction tract and cylinder bore (which has oil control rings to wipe oil off

The worst thing i can think of if ignition problems (burning hot/pinking,etc)

Nidge, be wary of what you add to pump derv, its generally already 5% bio - the maximum most Hdi/Tdci engines are fond of, your pump is £1500 - 2 stroke in the derv works for the old transit 2.5di (or so its said) but i only add cetane to my fuel in small quantities to help the burn

After getting a gas conversion on a toyota some years ago I was told to run on petrol for the first and last five minutes daily. The reason is gas is too dry to maintain the valve seating area ,thus a short while on petrol solves the problem . Grandads point about engine oil lubricating the system , I f engine oil was getting into the combustion chamber it would certainly oil the valves. It would also mean you had a sick motor ,you would have a smokey exhaust also poor performance and using a lot of engine oil. Hope this helps . Cheers Kevin.

The combustion chamber doesn't need lubrication. The rest of the engine does. As I said earlier if you are worried about your valves whilst using LPG you can fit the flash lube system. Every gas converted car that I have owned starts up on petrol anyway. I have never been advised by any of the companys fitting gas systems to my cars to run them on petrol at all.

Are there any other running problems with LPG???
can you cover really high mileages without problems
Apart from the lack of filling stations available in my area
What are service cost like
You dont get cheaper road tax
is the insurance more expensive

I have not had any running problems with LPG.
I don't know about really high mileages, I do about 30,000 miles a year in the LPG cars.
Service costs are the same as the petrol car. There is very little maintenence needed for the gas system.
You should get cheaper road tax with LPG, providing you get the emmisions into a lower tax band.
I have not had any difference in the insurance but I am on a fleet policy.

Tell Mercedes that. They ran two motors from Paris to Bejing in China and back again, one was run on normal diesel and the other had 2 stroke semi synthetic added to the fuel.

When they got back they stripped the engine down and the one that had been running on normal diesel showed signs of wear around the high pressure fuel pump, valves and injectors. The motor that had been running on diesel with added 2 stroke semi synthetic showed no signs of wear.

The motor with the added oil to the diesel did more MPG than the one running on normal diesel.

The Americans swear by it.

I totally agree Nidge, today's normal diesel has had that much removed you no longer get the full mpg or longevity

On that journey guest drivers were invited to test drive the Mercs, hardly conducive to a genuine MPG result, unlike a 1 car/1 driver run...

You may all know that Mercedes Benz have conducted in 2007 a long distance reliability test with a number of Mercedes E-Class 320 cdi from Paris to Beijing. Due to the fact that the diesel quality in East European Countries, Russia and China does not meet the DIN requirements, and Mercedes did not want to take the risk of their engines to flopp due to lousy fuel, the total tour has been accompanied by diesel tanks to re-fuel the E-Class cdi's. Selected members of the Mercedes clientele could apply to participate in selected parts of this test-tour, and advocats and notaries had to certify the correctness of this long term reliability test.

Quote:
The Ebay team in car number 3 won the fuel economy contest over the entire distance with a consumption of only 7,19 l/100 km. Thanks to their economical driving style, the "German Taxi" team only needed 5.5 liters of diesel for every 100 kilometers on the 616 kilometer-long drive from Lanzhou to Wuhai. The figures are especially remarkable because all participating cars are standard production E-Classes with 165 kW/224 HP. And: The luxury sedans didn't have it easy. They where fully loaded with up to three passengers and numerous pieces of luggage. Because of the anticipated bad road conditions and cold weather all cars were equipped with winter tires and a suspension that was raised by five centimeters.

thats 51mpg
