10, every vehicle must have a meter set at a national rate.

No flies on you hey Mr Skippy41!!

If everyone is charging a nationally set taximetered fare, you'll have more scope for discounting your fares and your discount rate could even rise from your normal 25% of the metered fare to perhaps as much as a 33% discount.

You crafty bar steward!!

You little devel you found me out

The reason behind having a national meter rate is to stop the likes of some company's like Addison lee, and others from charging extortionate call out rates, as the fares set would be the maximums that can be charged, owners or drivers are then free to discount from the price shown on the meter, and if every hack and PH had a meter, it puts everyone on a level playing field to start with.

So you suggest that the taxi drivers in London, Manchester, Liverpool and Outta Space should all charge the same rate per mile even though the costs of living and wages are different. Peoples ability to pay for taxis in London etc may well be considerably different to those in the less affluent parts of the country. I believe at busy periods in any part of the country the maximum fare will always apply as people struggle to obtain a taxi

Yes, if the rates where set at a reasonable level those in cities would earn more, and dont forget allegedly we are self employed so who pays the wage????

London rates are higher all because cab owners only have a choice of 2 types of expensive cabs that must comply with the out of date turning circle

You have evidence that if the rates are reasonable they would earn more? Does that include London taxi drivers? The customer pays the wages

Right Toots, if your out for a night out and you only have so much money for that night out like most folk,
for example, would you call a cab/ PH, that charges £10 or one that charges £5, knowing that you can save £10 for further sherbet's, now the cab that charges less per run will always win, I know because I have first hand experience of doing discounts :D

Working on your example there wouldn't be black cab in London making a living. There are millions of ppl make decisions not based on price alone. However most cab drivers I know only ever ask how much.

What happens when everyone discounts, and you find yourself having to do 50% or 70% off to get the fares?

If I went to Liverpool for a night out I wouldn't know the phone number of a taxi/ph to give to the person who was paying for it, let alone more than one number for comparisons

If any licensed vehicle is fitted with a taximeter.....it must display the local authority set rate of fares.

I don't think that is right, but it may only be Plymouth, I'll check.
