How does one get a list of them so those on TDO can lobby them on your behalf?

Yes, that may be an issue, but I'm sure you'll agree that overwhelmingly the confusion re appearance doesn't derive from wrongdoing on the part of drivers; rather, it's due to council policies.

You make a good point about London but if P/H don't know where they are going surely the extra mileage will reflect in the final fare? If a driver is going to go around in circles or take a longer route it won't it really matter how the fare is calculated?

Up here in Manchester we have private hire drivers who know more about the area than most cabbies. I'm all for very high standards of knowledge and a one tier system with the emphasis on high Quality driver controls but until we get them outside of London then I'm afraid there isn't much we can do about people not knowing where they are going.

Take the New Forest incident for example?

Apart from the technical or actual legal definition, what IS the difference between a taxi and and private hire car. I have this week used the same firm for two identical journeys. First was in a saloon car with a hackney plate on. Two days later the same model of saloon car with a private hire plate on. As a member of the public on these two occassions, how the hell am I supposed to know what is a taxi and what isn't. I think until the trade sort out this inhouse fighting, the non-licensed lot will just continue. As I see it the only REAL difference is one can pick up on the street or rank and the other cannot. Driving licence, the same, CRB check, the same, car used, the same. Some drivers in my area have both hc and ph driver badges and do drive both types on a regular basis, no wonder the public are confused.

You hit the nail on the head and of course a hackney driver doesn't need a license to take bookings over a telephone. Although Brentford did say they were going to try and close that loophole, how I don't know but we shall see?

Congratulated him on his governments good sense in removing a flawed piece of legislation and hoped he would encourage his colleagues to ensure that good sense prevailed.

I obviously pointed out that unlicensed and unregulated vehicles and drivers picking up members of the public including the vulnerable, perfectly legally by way of a loophole, in the 21st century was quite unbelievable.

So by extending the same logic when the DDA is applied PH should conform as well.

I think the public are confused because PH drivers and operators dress their vehicles to look like taxis .................. or call their operation "Local Taxis" instead of "Local Private Hire".
