The easy way to check if our notes are genuine is on the side with the castle there is a key hanging up this key opens the gates, you have to look hard but its there.

You know aswell they will spend it in the airport rather than risk taking it home. It is so amusing to us this thing with scottish money,we take english, irish no problem as for detecting fakes the usual watermark, squint printing dodgy paper much the same as dodgy english notes i suspect!!!!!

Life must be very quiet north of the border if this passes for entertainment.

How many of you have had a Scottish £100 note?

I've been on the taxis in Scotland for over 10 years, but I've never seen a £100 note, either Scottish or English.

I've had the odd £50, but always Bank of England, never Scotland. In fact I see a lot more Irish notes than notes over £20, but even then it's probably twice a year or so at most.

We get a good mix of English and Scottish notes, and have no problem with either.

For the English drivers who don't like Scottish notes in case they're forged, I think that the vast majority of forgeries are English notes, but I may be wrong.

As for the "legal tender" business, this seems to be a very narrow legal concept which has little relevance to everyday life - in fact look at the link below which says that neither Scottish nor English notes are legal tender up here.

At the end of the day it all comes down to the individual business and what they'll accept - as we all know the banks, post offices etc will take any legal sterling note, but getting this past peoples' prejudices is often difficult, and wariness due to the possibility of forgeries is understandable.

I have to take them as lots of the Off Shore guys fly down from Scotland; and yes I do shove them into the nearest petrol station normally and get the same "legal / not legal tender" arguement everytime.

To make things a bit easier - all us from South of the Border know what to check for in an English Bank Note and where to buy UV checkers / pens etc. Could someone North of the Border perhaps enlighten us on what to check for, the purchasing of fraud detection aids etc. If its sterling its legal but I'd like to be able to check same as I do Bank of England Notes.

The same uv checkers & pens work on our notes same as yours. 8)

Thanks gusmac - see that was easy at least we know know. And for you guys over the border a little tip with the English £50's - rub them against a piece of white paper - if they leave a red mark they are genuine! Oh and if you get offered a £100 note; tell them you can't change it

They still use sterling in Northern Ireland. I was handed a Northern Ireland £20 note a few weeks back. Again the punter had no other money. I hadn't a clue if it was real or not. It was the first time I had seen this type of note. Fortunatly the bank said it was fine.
How many of you have had a Scottish £100 note?
I once got a fare to Edinburgh a few years ago and all he had was a scottish £100 note.I took the chance but admit i was filling my pants till i got to the bank.it was a large red note,i have not seen one since

Just goes to show how closely we live to the wire if a poxy £100 means us "filling my pants", eh?

The only reason I don't like £foreign" sterling notes is that you can't feed them into that hole in the wall that sucks all my cash into it, never to see the light of day again. Snaffled by the voracious creature that is my bank account.

Ah well.

Ohhh Look no one has jumped on the political band wagon and demanded a UK currency yet?

BTW Thanks to the over the border guys I feel far better acception "foreign" currency now - the same way you do accepting our play money! One currency would be far easier.

Surely if we are a United Kingdom we should have a United Money System and not be charged extortionate rates by our Banks for exchange - we're still part of the UK aren't we?

Had to refuse a fare tonight as guy wanted to pay in Euro - about a £2.40 job but not worth me taking as Bank Charges would have been more than double the fare

There IS a single currency (pounds sterling), the issue is about the legitimacy of methods of paying for things.

The most acceptable method for day-to-day transactions is a Bank of England note, which will be accepted the country over, but some people have problems with Scottish notes.

The issue is not about having a single currency, it's about whether people accept various methods of payment, and how trustworthy they think they are.

It's said that a Scottish note is a bit like a cheque, ie there's nothing illegal about it, but there's a chance it may not be honoured or that it may be illegitimate in some way.

The problem with a Scottish banknote is not that it won't be honoured (because the banks are highly likely to go bust) but that other people won't accept it as legitimate or that it may be a dud.

Banks, POs etc know the score, that's why they generally don't have a problem with them.
