I've been on the taxis in Scotland for over 10 years, but I've never seen a £100 note, either Scottish or English.

I've had the odd £50, but always Bank of England, never Scotland. In fact I see a lot more Irish notes than notes over £20, but even then it's probably twice a year or so at most.

We get a good mix of English and Scottish notes, and have no problem with either.

For the English drivers who don't like Scottish notes in case they're forged, I think that the vast majority of forgeries are English notes, but I may be wrong.

As for the "legal tender" business, this seems to be a very narrow legal concept which has little relevance to everyday life - in fact look at the link below which says that neither Scottish nor English notes are legal tender up here.

At the end of the day it all comes down to the individual business and what they'll accept - as we all know the banks, post offices etc will take any legal sterling note, but getting this past peoples' prejudices is often difficult, and wariness due to the possibility of forgeries is understandable.

Thanks gusmac - see that was easy at least we know know. And for you guys over the border a little tip with the English £50's - rub them against a piece of white paper - if they leave a red mark they are genuine! Oh and if you get offered a £100 note; tell them you can't change it

Just goes to show how closely we live to the wire if a poxy £100 means us "filling my pants", eh?

The only reason I don't like £foreign" sterling notes is that you can't feed them into that hole in the wall that sucks all my cash into it, never to see the light of day again. Snaffled by the voracious creature that is my bank account.

BTW Thanks to the over the border guys I feel far better acception "foreign" currency now - the same way you do accepting our play money! One currency would be far easier.

There IS a single currency (pounds sterling), the issue is about the legitimacy of methods of paying for things.

The most acceptable method for day-to-day transactions is a Bank of England note, which will be accepted the country over, but some people have problems with Scottish notes.

The issue is not about having a single currency, it's about whether people accept various methods of payment, and how trustworthy they think they are.

It's said that a Scottish note is a bit like a cheque, ie there's nothing illegal about it, but there's a chance it may not be honoured or that it may be illegitimate in some way.

The problem with a Scottish banknote is not that it won't be honoured (because the banks are highly likely to go bust) but that other people won't accept it as legitimate or that it may be a dud.

Banks, POs etc know the score, that's why they generally don't have a problem with them.

iam with you on that one mikey its pure fun to see there faces and when they say can i have a english note i always say "no Probs ooooooooops all i have is scottish notes here " now if i pulled out the other pile of notes in my other pocket they would all be oooooooops what a daft jock iam
been doing that for years in diff jobs that deal with twits and it never fails .

i had one english bloke a few years back who asked me for all scottish notes and especialy the £1 notes as he just loved have fun when he got back home top bloke if you ask me
