EDUCATION ..................... EDUCATION .................... EDUCATION.
The trade has, open to them, the opportunity to properly educate all drivers into every aspect of the trade.
The customers should expect certain standards ............. and the only way those standards can be relied upon is if drivers are properly and fully aware of their responsibilities and how to fulfil them.
The customers should also expect that those same standards should be properly enforced buy the local authority.
The bottom line here is that nothing about this trade is PROFESSIONAL .............. most owners consider the drivers to be easily expendable ................... most drivers consider driving to be stop gap employment ................... most enforcement or licensing officers are there because that was the only position that offered the promotion to their next grade up or they retired from the Police force.
PH operators are businessmen ................ and rightly so ............... they should be greedy, they should be ruthless, if they are not the drivers will make no money.
Drivers should be properly educated and professional qualifications should be attained. This primarily gives some re-assurance to the customers but it also makes the whole business more reliable and so contracts are easier to obtain and retain.
Licensing and Enforcement Officers should be properly educated and professional qualifications should be attained. My council is no different than yours, they believe they have the best possible people running and working in their departments ..................... but they do not have either the knowledge or the experience to advise the council on the correct implementation of the law through their policies.
As a businessman, you will have the resource to seek solutions to your problems ..................... the councils rely on the advice which is based upon the interpretation of people who know little of the legislation which governs us all.
Its time to train the people already there .................. its time to raise the standards ...................... its time for us all to consider driving for hire and reward a profession ........................ and then we may all be better off financially.
Oh and how much would the public benefit ........................ how many complaints do you get from disgruntled customers or how often do you have to advertise in order to get new customers?

WOW ! what a world you live in !!
your fisrt point !
what education do you refer to ? we have bus companys who get susidised heavily and drivers recieve all sorts of training for all sorts of things
we the taxi industry get told/ instructed to have wheel chair accessable vehicles and councils do not offer us any training on how deal with, lift carry or load these people after they so kindly tell us thats what we need if we want to do our work.
i call that passing the buck from them to us not education
if your commets are suggesting these new class room type standards that i personaly feel are just another barrier to stop us getting drivers working ! I dont believe any teacher in a class room can educate you on haing four smack heads in your car wanting to find their next fix !
i think there is alot of things that can not be learned in a class room type enviroment. but i do hear my self agreeing with some of your comments
i have no fiath in local authoritys what so ever !! as you say there may well be some good officers out there (somewhere) but when you put decision making of our lives into the hands of 12 or more councillors that have not got a clue and bounced from one commitie to another, it mkes me shiver with fear what they might come up with after they have woken up after the brief from the officer.
so i clearly want to get rid of that way of controling my life and business and have at least a fighting chance wiith people of some education of our trade
i strongly disagree with you saying NOTHING in our trade is professional !!
maybe you watch to much of "street cars" on coronation street ! this is the perception we all need to get rid of and shout from the roof tops that there is 400 thousand drivers licensed outside of london with out the auxuilary staff around it ! and our industry is now one of the lardgest in the country creating employment, we are also the only 24hr door to door transport system etc etc etc
stop thinking of the porta cabin in a pub car park image and be positive about what is going out there
i have invested over the last 5 years over half a million in my business and my drivers are my customers as well as my fare paying customers and i reconise that ! so please dont think all operators are just in it for the greed. i have a ambition to build a call center that can be ran by disabled people susch as wheel chair bound people.
as you say many officers in the council are there just as the next step to the next post !! what good is that to me as they simply move on by the time they ave some knowledge of the industry. and i get the next numbty to look after me,and they take sod all notice of us in the know because they think they know best about the trade
i think the quality of service needs to come from within from the operators and the councils need to listern to the operators (if we could stop argueing between ourselves)
but yes we can agree if we become more proffesional we will all benifit ! its how we get there i disagree with !!
good luck to you !
